WBO TO TAKE UP USE OF BANNED SUBSTANCE IN WORLD TITLE By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Sat, 13 Oct 2007 One of the issues to be taken up at the WBO Convention in Puerto Rico next month will be the use of a banned substance by previously undefeated Thai challenger Pornsawan Kratingdaenggym in his WBO minimum weight title fight against Filipino Donnie ?Ahas? Nietes which Nietes won by a unanimous twelve round decision at the plush Waterfront Hotel in Cebu City. WBO Asia Pacific vice president Leon Panoncillo responded to a query from Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today on what action he planned to take over the clear violation of the rules by Pornsawan. Panoncillo responded by stating that ?the WBO has been informed about the incident. It will be discussed at our convention.? A knockdown in the fourth round and a one point deduction in the tenth round by referee Raul Caiz Jr for repeated low blows gave Nietes an edge in a fight that was much closer than what was reflected in the scorecards of judges Salven Lagumbay 116-110 and Levi Martinez 115-111. The third judge, Sawaeng Taweekom of Thailand had Nietes the winner by only one point 114-113. After the fight Pornsawan was found to have used Ammonia which is commonly known as ?smelling salts? and is a banned substance, in-between rounds. It is classified as a restorative or stimulant and is normally used to revive individuals who feel faint. GAB Cebu physician Dr. Jose Unabia revealed the following day that an initial screening showed traces of the banned substance Ephedrine which is commonly used as a stimulant in a small urine sample taken from the Thai boxer. Dr. Unabia said that since Nietes won there appeared to be no interest in pursuing the case against the Thai boxer which the doctor lamented saying ?we have to correct that mentality.? Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today sought the opinion of the GAB boxing division chief Dr. Nasser Cruz who appeared reluctant to discuss the issue and said the official statement should come from Panoncillo. We made it clear we would pursue the issue. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Ronnie Nathanielsz. |
