Pacquiao?s Revenge on Horn: No Rematch

PhilBoxing.com

It?s been over three weeks that the sport of boxing regressed or took steps back from all the progress it had made thus far in 2017 when the world saw Manny Pacquiao (59-7-2, 38KOs) lose his WBO world welterweight title to an undeserving challenger, Jeff Horn (17-0-1, 11KOs) on July 2, 2017.

Boxing Trainer and analyst, Teddy Atlas made his displeasure known regarding the decision as he spoke to fellow Sportscaster Steven A. Smith on the ESPN network. Atlas speculated that the reason for the controversial decision was either due to corruption or greed. When Smith asked him to elaborate further, Atlas referenced the attendance at the Brisbane stadium (a reported 55,000) and the commercial success of the event.

This writer often does not agree with Atlas on many issues, but this time the outspoken Analyst made a very interesting point. No one can take away Jeff Horn's clean cut image, determination, hard work, etc. away from him, but the reality of it was he simply did not do enough to secure a win against the living legend, Pacquiao!

According to Compubox, overall Horn threw landing 15% of his punches while Pacquiao landed 37% of his punches during the fight nearly stopping Horn in the 9th. The referee admonished Horn of possibly stopping the fight after the 9th round. It doesn?t matter that Horn won or had a few good rounds or had the crowd cheering for him. The fight is judged over 12 rounds on the scorecards.

During the post fight interview in the ring, Pacquiao was asked if he wanted a rematch. Pacquiao cited a rematch clause and that he would look to enforce it.

According to fellow sports writers and fans, this controversial decision in no way takes away from wanting to see Pacquiao fight a rematch with Mayweather should he likely prevail against MMA fighter Connor McGreggor or possible fights against Crawford, Broner, etc.

Why?

Even though Pacquiao is 38 and is clearly not the same fighter he was 5 years ago, he clearly won against Horn and is still performing on world class level. If a Pacquiao-Horn rematch is good economically for Brisbane Australia as Atlas insinuated which was likely the reason for the controversial decision, then Pacquiao?s revenge for getting robbed should be no rematch.

Pacquiao should then continue to pursue a rematch with Mayweather or pursue other ?big fights?. That will send a message to International Promoters that if an out of town fighter can?t get a fair shake in their town, other fighter management should use that incident as a reason to stay in the USA instead of fighting abroad. If Pacquiao rematches with Horn it should be in Las Vegas or the Philippines so he gets a fair shake, if he outperforms Horn for a second time.

Boxing Notes

I?m disgusted with former World Champion Tim Bradley who holds a controversial decision win over Pacquiao like Horn. He was in Australia as part of the TV cast for Pacquiao-Horn calling the fight. He had a slick smirk on his face and seemed insincere saying he thought Pacquiao won and Horn lost. How he recapped the fight appeared as though he just stopped short of saying Horn deserved the decision victory. He then went on to say Horn can compete with the other top welterweight in the world. Really? Does that include him or was Bradley under the influence of some illegal substance? Not surprised at Bradley because he reportedly made millions for a rematch against Pacquiao that he did not deserve. Hopefully Horn will not make millions for a rematch he does not deserve against Pacquiao. Tim Bradley should un-retire and as an alternative, he and Horn should fight in Australia. Bradley is with Top Rank and Arum reportedly has options to promote Horn. I Pick Horn by 12rd Dec against Bradley with similar compubox results(Horn landing 15% to Bradley 34%)??Why is Bob Arum criticizing Pacquiao?s trainer Freddie Roach to the Media? Why is Freddie Roach and Pacquiao complaining to the media they have not been paid? Guys you all did excellent together. Can?t you guys resolve your differences privately?...... Kell Brook is alluding to making changes when he recovers and returns to boxing. Hope he?s not referring to his trainer who from my vantage point did a very good job in the Golovkin fight and an even better job in the Spence Jr. fight. Remember Brook was outboxing, leading on the scorecards, and on his way to victory against Spence Jr. He quit for a second time due another eye injury. According to my sources, Turns out not only did Kell Brook have a second eye surgery he reportedly also had ?Open Heart Surgery? as well. The operating Doctors were shocked to find out Kell Brook has no heart! All kidding aside, Can someone tell Kell Brook to call Sugar Ray Leonard so Leonard can tell him what he did when he fought Hearns the first time in 1981 and could not see out of one of his eyes. Realizing a sense of urgency because Leonard was losing the fight and blind in one eye, he knocked out Hearns! It was later discovered Leonard had a detached retina. If Brook is gonna make a change, whatever he?s thinking, he should first go see the Wizard of Oz like the ?Tin Man? did and ask for a heart. If the Wizard says no, keep his dignity and retire.

He has been a Boxing Writer for over ten years having written for several top boxing websites on the World Wide Web. Before becoming a writer, Ralph's passion was for professional wrestling until he realized professional wrestling was entertainment and not a real sport. It was at that time the 1984 US Olympic team made up of future stars such as Evander Holyfield, Meldrick Taylor, Pernell Whitaker, etc. entered the professional ranks and signed with promotional outfit Main Events. It was also at that time a young exciting Heavyweight originally hailing from Brooklyn named Mike Tyson also turned professional and became the face of boxing. Young boxing fan Ralph just couldn't get enough of boxing as a large part of it was being broadcast on "free TV". As time went on, Ralph felt boxing writers were not being forthcoming with their boxing coverage, opinion pieces, interviews, etc. So Ralph decided to write an article and submitted it to a Boxing website thinking it would be deleted and ignored by the Editor. To Ralph's surprise his article was posted on their website and the readers embraced it. The rest is history.

"I thank God for the Internet because it has created opportunities for writers like myself who likely would not have been given an opportunity to write for print publications. I hope someday soon to expand my role in Boxing on different levels." -- Ralph Rimpell
