Canelo vs GGG. The Brewing of a Perfect Storm

PhilBoxing.com

With all this Mayweather and McGregor talk, it?s easy to forget about one of this year?s most anticipated fights. Saul ?Canelo? Alvarez (49-1-1 34 KO?s) and Gennady ?GGG? Golovkin (37-0 33 KO?s). This fight took, what seemed like an eternity to set up but on September 16th these two will clash at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas Nevada. Canelo who is a Mexican fighter and GGG who trains under Abel Sanchez and likes to fight ?Mexican style? help build this fight to be a great one not to mention this fight takes place on Mexican Independence Day. These two great fighters have complementary fighting styles and as the saying goes ?styles make fights?.

Granite chinned GGG has an amateur record of 345-5 and a professional record of 37-0 and has never tasted canvas. He has even been known to let his opponents hit him. GGG has been called the middleweight Mike Tyson with his high knockout percentage, he has been one of the most feared men in boxing today. GGG utilizes shifts, bringing devastating power from both hands. Gennady is like a ferocious lion in the ring, constantly walking forward, applying pressure, fearless, stalking his prey and when there?s an opening he ?pounces? and crushes the opposition with thunderous shots. Kell Brook (36-2-0 25KO?s) can attest to GGG?s power, having to get surgery after their matchup left Brook with a broken orbital bone.

Canelo, who?s only loss comes by way of Floyd ?Money? Mayweather (49-0 26 KO?s) via majority decision, also has a granite chin. Canelo has never been knocked down. As GGG likes to come forward and put pressure, Canelo likes fighters to bring the fight to him where he can counterpunch. Canelo is one of the best and most creative combination punchers today. When fighters stand in front of Canelo he picks them apart with his combination punching. Canelo has also matured a lot as a fighter since his loss to Mayweather. His defense and boxing IQ has evolved. He works head movement better and he also has power.

The age advantage goes to Canelo who turns 27 years old July 18th while GGG is 35 years old. Canelo also has the edge on hand speed along with his creative combination punching. Both fighters have power but the power advantage goes to GGG, he is the harder puncher.

This fight is what boxing is about, two top fighters fighting each other. The best fighting the best. Come September 16th, will the younger, faster Canelo wear down GGG with his slick counter punching? Or will GGG put Canelo?s granite chin to the test? This fight could either end very quickly since both fighters are capable of ending the fight, or this fight can end up being a close decision. Either way these two great fighters with complementary styles will collide and cause a ?perfect storm? in the ring!
