PRES. ARROYO EXTENDS HELP TO MARAON, GONZALES PhilBoxing.com Wed, 03 Oct 2007 Even while she is out of the country on an official mission, President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo showed her concern for Filipino athletes when she personally directed Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita to help two Mindanao boxers and their manager who encountered problems securing visa from the US Embassy in Manila. The Presidential intercession to help undefeated boxers Glenn Gonzales of Mlang, North Cotabato and Jundy Maraon of Suminot, Zamboanga del Sur, and their manager, Noli Pinol, sent Malacanang staffmembers on a line burning frenzy in an attempt to save the day for the two boxers who were supposed to see action in the undercard of the Manny Pacquiao-Marco Antonio Barrera fight set Oct. 7 in Las Vegas. As late as today, documents related to the visa application were sought by the Presidential staff from the Office of Vice Governor Manny Pinol and immediately faxed to Malacanang as they started a frantic effort to get the visas approved before the fight. The President was informed by former DILG Undersecretary Ray Roquero of the problem encountered by the boxers and their manager with the US embassy which deferred the apporval of the visa application until the three are able to present their approved petititon for a working visa. Immediately upon receiving the information, the President directed Secretary Ermita to work on the problem. While Vice Governor Pinol is hoping that the visas would be released before the fight, he said there is an option for Maraon and Gonzales to fight in the undercard of Bobby Pacquiao Nov. 29 also in Las Vegas. "It may be too tight for Oct. 7. If they can't make it to the Pacquiao-Barrera fight, we will just have to be contented with the Nov. 29 card and wait for Manny's big fight in February," Vice Governor Pinol said. The Presidential concern for the two boxers and their manager, he said, is enough to inspire the fighters as they show to the world their mettle as future champions. Both Maraon a bantamweight and Gonzales a featherweight are undefeated. Maraon is 10 wins with 8 knockouts and one draw while Gonzales is 6 wins with four knockouts and 1 draw and is a former amateur standout. Both are 22 years old. ![]() |
