WBO TO UNIFY ASIA PACIFIC TITLES! PhilBoxing.com Wed, 03 Oct 2007 Reacting to criticisms that the World Boxing Organization (WBO) is giving away titles of all kinds and forms in the Asia Pacific Region, WBO Regional Vice President Leon Panoncillo has announced that he will work to unify the youth and the regional championship titles. Panoncillo, who was in the country to supervise the title defenses of bantamweight Glenn Porras and minimumweight Edrin Dapudong of their respective youth titles in Kidapawan City Sept. 29 and the WBO minimumweight championship in Cebu City Sept. 30, admitted he was aware of the confusion caused by the various titles the boxing body has been awarding. "We will try to unify all of the regional titles," Panoncillo told the media last Saturday. Foremost in his plan is the unification of the bantamweight youth title being held by North Cotabato's Glenn Porras and the Asia Pacific diadem owned by Cebu City's Robert Allanic. Porras, 22, who successfully defended his title against Indonesia's Rivu Rengkung last Saturday is expected to have a tough fight against Allanic, who retained his title last Sunday against a Korean opponent. Panoncillo also said he will match WBO Minimumweight Asia Pacific Youth Champion Dapudong against Milan Milendo, who is expected to inherit the WBO Asia Pacific title vacated by newly-crowned world champion Donnie Nietes. The Allanic-Porras and Dapudong-Milendo matchups will be the subject of negotiations between Panoncillo and the Cebu-based ALA Boxing Club which manages Allanic and Milendo. The fights, should the boxing men of Cebu agree, is recommended to be featured as the main undercards of a big Araneta Coliseum fight being prepared for Rey Bautista, who is expected to make a comeback following his disastrous outing against Daniel Ponce de Leon. ![]() |
