TONY WEEKS TO REFEREE PACQUIAO-BARRERA REMATCH By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Tue, 02 Oct 2007 Tony Weeks has been picked to referee the rematch between Filipino ring idol Manny Pacquiao and Mexican icon Marco Antonio Barrera at the Mandalay Bay Resort Hotel and Casino on Sunday, Manila Time. Nevada State Athletic Commission executive director Keith Kizer informed Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today about the assignments. Kizer also told us that the judges would be Tom Schreck, Jerry Roth and Glenn Trowbridge. Weeks was the referee in the September 17, 2005 lightweight title fight where the champion Leavander Johnson took a bad beating from Jesus Chavez and lost by an eleventh round stoppage although Weeks was criticized by some for not stopping the fight earlier although Johnson himself protested the stoppage. He died five days later from a brain injury and the tragedy had an emotional impact on Weeks who told the Arizona Republic ?when something traumatic like that happens, it cant help but affect you.? While Weeks said the death of Johnson didn?t change his desire to be a referee it ?heightened my awareness.? Not long afterwards Weeks was assigned by the Nevada State Athletic Commission to referee the super bantamweight title fight between Israel Vasquez and Oscar Larios. Weeks also came under criticism for his handling of the 10 round TKO suffered by Jose Luis Castillo at the hands of Diego Corrales in what was regarded as one of the bloodiest battles of all time. Top Rank promoter Bob Arum who was Castillo?s promoter ripped Weeks saying he allowed Corrales to spit out his mouthpiece twice after he was knocked down and have it washed which gave him time to recover. However, Weeks claimed he did everything by the rules. Judge Jerry Roth has officiated in two fights of Barrera, giving him a 115-113 edge in his November 27, 2004 bout against Erik Morales and scoring it 114-113 for Junior Jones when he scored a unanimous twelve round decision over Barrera on April 18, 1997. Roth also officiated in the second Pacquiao-Morales fight which Pacquiao won by a tenth round TKO. At the time of the stoppage, Roth had the Filipino ahead 87-84. When Pacquiao won the IBF junior featherweight title by a sixth round TKO over Lelohonolo Ledwaba on June 23, 2001 Roth had Pacquiao ahead 50-44. Trawbridghe was a judge in Pacquiao-Morales III which the Filipino won by a devastating third round knockout. Tom Schreck hasn?t worked any of the fights of either Pacquiao or Barrera. In an ESPN article Kieran Mulvaney quoted Schreck as saying once, ?I want my work to look good to my commission and that?s who evaluates me. I want my bosses to be happy with the competence of my score. If you were doing something to please a promoter, you wouldn?t work too long.? Roth has come under fire in the past along with Chuck Giampa. A Cyber Boxing Zone article said ?boxing fans should do well to cross their fingers and toes whenever these two gents are scheduled to judge a fight, because it seems they have been involved with every lame Las Vegas decision.?
