TOP AUSSIE PROMOTER WANTS TO CHANGE IMAGE OF RP BOXERS
By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Thu, 27 Sep 2007
Australia?s 2006 ?Promoter of the Year? and well-known boxing host Peter Maniatis wants to change the negative image of Filipino boxers in Australia caused by poor quality fighters getting mauled in terrible mismatches.
Maniatis told Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today that he wants ?to show the Australian public the skill and power Philippine boxers possess and the great match-ups that could take place? between talented Filipino and Australian fighters.
Maniatis was looking at a possible World Cup style encounter between the Philippines and Australia which he would promote in Melbourne and beam ?live? to the Philippines via internet pay-per-view and with the time difference of two hours it would work out perfectly for fight fans in the Philippines.
In pushing the project Maniatis noted that the Australian public are used to seeing over-matched Filipino boxers losing and think Filipino boxers ?have power but not much skill.?
The host of the TV KO boxing show for over five years named some of the Filipino boxers he would like to feature on the fight card including Jimrex Jaca, Rev Santillan, Dondon Sultan in fights against Aussie fighters like Matt Powell and Shannon McMahon,
Maniatis said he has been trying for a whole year to get Filipino ring idol Manny Pacquiao to visit Australia and said that hopefully Pacquiao could be a guest if the Philippines vs Australia event takes place early next year.
The Australian promoter said he plans to visit Manila within the next six weeks and hopes to meet Filipino managers and promoters such as Tony Aldeguer and Rex "Wakee" Salud to help make the Australia-Philippines fight card happen. At the same time Maniatis said if Filipino promoters wish to stage the event in Manila and have the TV and backing ?we could do it in the Philippines.?
