Dejected Batawang Going Home
By Ed de la Vega, DDS PhilBoxing.com Thu, 27 Sep 2007
I very seldom get calls very early in the morning as I do not start my working days until 10:00 am. That is why when my phone rung this morning, I knew it was from someone who has got an important message for me.
?Doc, si Bert po ito. Uuwi na kami bukas kasi postponed na naman yun laban ko? ( We are going home tomorrow ?cuz my fight was postponed again), Batawang told me.
Batawang sounded so disconsolate. He went on saying that he feels very frustrated not only because his opponent kept on making excuses and that all he got from the almost 4 months of his stay LA are bills on top of each other. But he understands the situation and is willing to wait for his golden moment against the ?injured? Solis.
Reports indicate that Ulisis Solis is suffering from ?bursitis and tendinitis?. This diagnosis was provided by Dr. Fernando Shoji, I assume a practicing MD from Mexico. Shoji indicated that Solis will need many days to rest and follow-up MRI before he can fight again. Given that scenario, Solis at the earliest will not be available to fight until January 2008.
Although in the fight business, postponements do happen, in this case things should have been handled better. When Solis first claimed that he ?injured? his shoulder, those in the know should have acted upon it and investigated further or at best started searching for another opponent for Batawang and held an ?eliminator? with the winner facing Solis next year for the title! That is the only right thing to do! Making Batawang wait did not seem to be fair.
But then again boxing much like life, is not fair!
Now, the only thing poor Batawang can do is get on the plane and go back home. Penniless and loaded with a stack of bills to pay!
What a way to spend a summer in LA!
