COUNTDOWN TO CANELO-GOLOVKIN
By Ralph Rimpell PhilBoxing.com Sun, 07 May 2017

Saul ?Canelo? Alvarez improved his professional record to 49-1-1(34KOs) by totally outclassing Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (50-3-1, 32KOs) at the T-Mobile center in Las Vegas, Nevada. The fact that Chavez Jr. was the taller and bigger man did not make a difference as Canelo was able to score at will. Chavez Jr. did not win a single round against Canelo. Perhaps Chavez Jr. won a moral victory by not being knocked out by Canelo and going the full twelve rounds, as most fans and boxing writers thought he would have been knocked out by Canelo in the later rounds. At the post fight press conference Chavez, Jr. blamed his poor effort on inactivity and on fighting below the 168lb division. It appears Chavez, Jr. intends on continuing with his boxing career. Canelo then took the podium to address the media. After he fielded a few questions the post fight press conference quickly turned into another press conference to announce that Canelo and unified middleweight champion Genady ?Easy Work? Golovkin (37-0, 33KOs) will take place on September 16, 2017. Golovkin and his camp were invited to the stage and fielded questions. Golden Boy CEO and President, Oscar De la Hoya, states that no venue has been decided at this point. Places such as Dubai and Wembley Stadium have expressed interest in hosting the fight.
In Other Bouts
Former middleweight champion David Lemieux (38-3, 34KOs) earned a hard fought decision against Marco Reyes (35-5, 26KOs) and keeps himself in the title fight mix.
Former interim world champion and world title challenger Lucas Matthysse (38-4, 35KOs) made a successful return to the ring by knocking out Emanuel Taylor (20-5, 14KOs).
In a battle of undefeated fighters, Joseph Diaz Jr. (24-0, 13KOs) won an uneventful decision victory against Manuel Avila (22-1, 8KOs).
