IBF ORDERS NIETES TO FIGHT MANDATORY CHALLENGER LIKELY TO BE FORMER WORLD CHAMPION JUAN CARLOS REVECO OF ARGENTINA

PhilBoxing.com

CEBU CITY ? Newly crowned IBF world flyweight champion Donnie 'Ahas' Nietes has been ordered by the IBF to fight a mandatory challenger on or before October 29 this year, ALA Promotions has informed PhilBoxing.com.

?Along [with] the IBF congratulatory letter he received last Tuesday... Nietes [also] received an order for a mandatory defense to be scheduled on or before October 29th this year,? ALA Promotions wrote in an e-mail.

Nietes, who wished to unify the flyweight titles by fighting any of the current title holders in Zou Shiming (WBO), Kazuto Ioka (WBA) or Juan Hernandez (WBC), has to set aside his plans for now.

?We were looking to unify titles, but now we will have to honor this letter from the IBF first,? Nietes's promoter Michael Aldeguer said who earlier disclosed that he had a scheduled fight for Nietes in Bacolod City in November.

According to the IBF's latest rankings, the No. 1 and No. 2 slots for the flyweight division have remained vacant. Rated No. 3 is Argentina's Juan Carlos Reveco, No. 4 Andrew Selby of Wales and No. 5 Takuya Kogawa of Japan. It appears that Reveco, the highest ranked contender, will most likely be Nietes's mandatory.

Reveco (38-3-0, 19KOs) from Las Heras in Mendoza, Argentina is 2 years younger than Nietes at 33 who previously held the WBA world light flyweight title from June to Dec., 2007. He captured the WBA Interim world flyweight title on Aug. 15, 2009 and then the WBA world flyweight title on Feb. 27, 2013 where he successfully defended it five times until he was dethroned by the current titleholder Kazuto Ioka of Japan on April 22, 2015.

Nietes (40-1-4, 22KOs) is the Philippines' longest reigning world champion after he held the WBO world minimumweight and the WBO world light flyweight belts from September 30, 2007 to May 28, 2016. He moved up to flyweight where he captured the vacant IBF world flyweight crown by defeating Komgrich Nantapech of Thailand last Saturday, April 29, at the Waterfront Hotel & Casino in Cebu City becoming only the third Filipino to capture world titles in three divisions. The other two were Manny Pacquiao and Nonito Donaire Jr.
