NIETES DEFEATS NANTAPECH BY UD, CAPTURES IBF WORLD FLYWEIGHT TITLE
By Dong Secuya PhilBoxing.com Sat, 29 Apr 2017

CEBU CITY ? Donnie 'Ahas' Nietes continued to make history after he defeated Komgrich Nantapech of Thailand to capture the IBF world flyweight title and became a three division world champion at the Waterfront Hotel & Casino here Saturday night on the main event of 'Pinoy Pride 40'.
Nietes, 34, using his patented technical skill, connected heavily on Nantapech with uppercuts, overhands and crosses but the bull-strong Thai, seven years younger than Nietes, appeared not to be affected by Nietes's punches and continue to hound Nietes throughout the night raising questions if the flyweight division would be too heavy a division for Nietes.
After connecting heavily in the first four rounds, Nietes slowed down in the 5th and 6th rounds as the Thai, getting stronger, tagged Nietes in close quarters. Nantapech continued to pursue Nietes but Nietes had always the better of the exchanges. Nietes connected with ia barrage of heavy punches in the 10th and 11th rounds but these seemed to have no effect at all to solidly built Thai.
Judge Somsak Sirianant of Thailand had it 115-113 while judges Katsuhiko Nakamura of Japan and Greg Ortega of the Philippines had it 117-111, all in favor of Nietes.
Nietes previously held the WBO minimumweight and WBO light flyweight titles in the last 10 years before he moved up to flyweight.
Nietes now improves to 40 wins, 1 loss and 4 draws with 22 wins inside the distance while Nantapech drops to 22-3-0, 15KOs.
