NIETES SHUTS OUT SOSA IN A BOXING CLINIC, CAPTURES WBO INTL FLYWEIGHT TITLE
By Dong Secuya PhilBoxing.com Sun, 25 Sep 2016
CARSON, CA ? Donnie 'Ahas' Nietes, like fine wine, has become a lot better the older he gets, and administered a boxing clinic to the 62-fight veteran and former junior flyweight champion Edgar Sosa of Mexico, shutting out the game Mexican with the three judges of the fight, Max DeLuca , Alenjandro Rochin and Pat Russell giving all rounds to Niertes with identical scores of 120-108 to capture the WBO intercontinental flyweight title at the StubHub Center here Saturday night in front of a sizeable Filipino and Mexican crowd.
Nietes, wearing his trademark purple shorts and Sosa, wearing black, studied each other in the uneventful and slow first couple of round but action picked up in the third with Nietes connecting with a hard counter right. In the 4th, Nietes showed great timing and connected on his jabs and straight rights. Sosa was staggered with a hard right by Nietes towards the end of the round as Sosa wisely hugged Nietes to end the round.
In the fifth, Nietes continued to potshot Sosa with accurate jabs and hard straight rights that took a toll on Sosa's face. Nietes connected with a hard right as the bell ends the round. Nietes continues to dish out punishment in the succeeding rounds as Sosa, tried as he might, could not touch the slippery as snake Nietes. In the 10th and in the final round, Nietes wobbled Sosa with overhand rights but could not put away the Mexican for good who also showed great durability to survived Nietes's accurate and solid punches.
Nietes thus has wins his first fight at flyweight which more likely he will bound to dominate as the two big names of the division, pound for pound No. 1 Roman Gonzalez and Juan Francisco Estrada have moved up to the super flyweight division.
Nietes is now 39-1-4, 22KOs while Sosa dropped to 52-10-0 with 30 Kos.
Referee Lou Moret raises the hands of Donnie Nietes after Nietes's victory over Edgar Sosa Saturday night in Carson, CA.
