Arizona Boxing News & Notes With Don Smith: Boxing Benefit, Knockout Night at the D & More By Don Smith PhilBoxing.com Sun, 25 Sep 2016 Boxing Fans, The City of Tolleson, Arizona with remarkable collaboration from USA Boxing Arizona, Sonny?s Gym, Crescent Crown Distributing, Iron Boy Promotions and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Organization will host an afternoon and night of amateur and professional boxing at Veterans Park in Tolleson, on Saturday, October 29. It is a special event created to generate needed capital to help the VFW Chapter in Tolleson to fund a worthy project. Admission to the event is free and the amateur bouts commence at noon while the professionals begin their battles at 6 PM highlighted by a title bout between Phoenix featherweight Carlos Castro (16-0-7 knockouts) vs. an opponent to be determined. The goal of the benefit is to help the Tolleson VFW chapter find land for the purpose of building a facility that will accommodate its? 500 members. According to a spokesperson associated with the city of Tolleson, the VFW chapter currently holds meetings at various locations (in the city) and the inconvenience hinders the group?s effort to complete their mission to help military veterans resolve serious problems. Members of the Veterans organization started the fundraising drive 4 years ago with car washes, yard sales, etc. Although well intentioned, the effort fell way short of raising enough capital; so, word of their dilemma spread and a well-organized coalition was formed to remedy the unfortunate situation. The City of Tolleson has promised to send out a detailed press release next week and we will update our readers if the release adds new information to our filed story. As for the boxing lineup, we don?t have any details on the amateur program, sanctioned by USA Boxing Arizona after an approved application by Sonny Gym. Previous ?Smokers? usually offer 15-20 amateur bouts; but bout number can vary. Iron Boy Promotions and Crescent Crown Distributing have a long standing working relationship and their history of helping veterans was a factor in lending a hand to the non-profit benefit. CCD will donate beer sales proceeds on 10/29 to aid the project. As for the projected professional (Iron Boy 35) lineup, Iron boy boxing matchmaker Mike Sanchez volunteered the following names as tentative combatants on the card: Daron ?Sweet Tay? Williams (4-0), Adrian Servin (1-0), Luis Espinoza (5-0) and Ryan Riddell (2-0). All bouts are subject to change and the total number of pro bouts is expected to reach 8-10. Tolleson Veterans Park is located at 8650 West Van Buren in Tolleson. Please support the event and make sure you give a wink or salute to all veterans. Knockout Night: Earlier this year I accepted an invite from Roy Jones Jr. Promotions to travel to Las Vegas and watch boxing at the Downtown Las Vegas Center and I left the venue very happy, at the end of the last bout, although my stay at a nearby motel was less than memorable or comfortable; that?s another story. The venue is top drawer and the presented card was very entertaining. Once again, an invitation has been extended and I will be at the Center on Friday September 30 to watch super bantamweight Hanzel ?Rude Boy? Martinez (23-2-19 knockouts) in a scheduled 10 round tangle with Emmanuel Quartey (20-2-19 knockouts) for the vacant WBA International Super Bantamweight Championship. The WBA sanctioned title bout is one of three title tiffs on the card. Tony Lopez Jr. (11-1-4 knockouts) faces Stephon ?Showstopper? Young in a 10 round co-main feature while John ?The Phenom? Vera (14-0-9 knockouts) makes his first title defense Milorad ?Micko? Zizic (12-1-6 knockouts) in an 8 round contest. At stake, Vera?s WBA-NABA USA Super Welterweight Championship Belt. The remainder of the card will be filled with boxing prospects from the Las Vegas Area. Doors open at 5 p.m. PT with the opening contest set for 6 p.m. The ?Knockout Night at the D? series was developed in partnership with the Downtown Las Vegas Events Center and Neon Star Media. Ticket prices range from general admission ($14.99) to VIP ringside ($99.99). Promoter of record is RJJ Promotions and the event will air live (11 p.m. ET) on CBS Sports Network and internationally via ESPN (digital delay ? check local listing). DLVEC is located at 200 S. 3rd Street in downtown Las Vegas. Mail Bag: Jorge Garcia wants to know how he can watch the October 1 light heavyweight title fight between WBO & WBA Champion J?rgen Brahmer (48-2-35 knockouts) and challenger Nathan Cleverly (29-3). It is listed as a PPV broadcast from Manchester, England. Answer: The event will be shown on Sky Sports (live) and boxing fans can watch the title bout with a subscription according to Margaret (Viewer Relations), Sky Sports. Our interest in the bout is keen because the winner could be defending his title against Arizona Light Heavyweight contender Trevor McCumby who has quietly compiled an impressive record of 23-0 with 18 knockouts and reportedly is in line for a minor title bout in October or November. We are told the swirling rumors connecting McCumby and Jesse Hart for a future meet are untrue?. Avid reader Sam Levine wants to know what we hear about a potential match between Daniel Jacobs (32-1-29 knockouts) and Gennady Golovkin (36-0-33 knockouts). Answer: According to the WBA there has been contact between the two camps; but, it appears that GGG is leaning towards signing Billy Joe Saunders as his next ring foe. Fans are demanding GGG meet ?Canelo? and that may happen in September of 2017; if the two prime time fighters sign to tangle, it will be a huge PPV Event??Annabelle Greene asks why ABNN endorses watching sports events in Phoenix at Twin Peaks Sports Bar & Grill on Camelback Road over Hooters and other popular sports bars located in the valley of the Sun. Answer: Our favorable review of Twin Peaks (in our role as consumer watchdog) is based on several factors: (1) owners Carolyn and Andrew Bayless are totally committed to entertaining and giving back to the Arizona sports community without reservation. (2) Twin Peaks shows all sports, not sure about badminton and the number of screens available totals more than 80 and the facility is spacious. (3) The quality of service, diverse menu choices and safe & clean environment are easy conclusions to make after 1-2 visits. (4) Twin Peaks marketing department sends out press releases to the media and the establishment returns phone calls promptly when questions are directed to management about upcoming events including fundraisers for meaningful causes. In summation, these factors are keys to our decision making process in utilizing space to mention events televised at Twin Peaks. Phoenix is home to numerous quality sports bars and we wish all of them, success in courting sports fans! Tourney Re-cap: The City of Tolleson rolled out the red carpet for boxers and coaches who took part in the USA Boxing Arizona sanctioned event presented on Sunday, September 18 at the Tardeada Latina Street Festival. Breakfast and lunch was provided for the boxers and all volunteers who played a role in organizing and setting up the 7 bout show. Central Boxing won the team trophy with three wins while Ulisses Urbina ((Knockout Boxing) and Alex Diaz (Arizona Fight Club) won trophies for their taunt tussle, won by Urbina via TKO. Here is a list that includes the other 6 winners: (1) Fabian Montes (Central Boxing) (2) Melvin Hernandez (Guadalupe Boxing) (3) Colby Maciel (Pro Edge) (4) Myron Bridges (Unattached) (5) Felix Gutierrez (Sonny?s Gym) (6) Julian Lopez (Central Boxing). Special Thanks to the City of Tolleson, Sonny?s Boxing, Iron Boy Promotions and USA Boxing Arizona for their productive efforts in making the show happen. Holmes Boxing: Randy Lopez (Holmes Boxing) invited Arizona Boxing News & Notes to watch their Tuesday September 27 boxing show in Santa Fe New Mexico at the very popular Buffalo Thunder Resort and Casino. Unfortunately, we will have to take a rain check due to scheduling woes. Fox Sports 1 will broadcast the prime time show which is produced and promoted by Premier Boxing Champions in collaboration with Holmes Boxing and Warriors Boxing Promotions.. Air time is scheduled for 9:00 PM ET /6:00 PM PT. 9 bouts are on tap and two of the fights feature Arizona Boxers. Phoenix super featherweight boxer Cesar Alan Valenzuela (12-4-1) and welterweight Francisco Medel (9-4). Valenzuela meets Dennis Galarza (13-1) in a 6 round attraction. Medel takes on Emmanuel Medina (10-0) in a 6 round battle. Here is a rundown of the card; Main Event: Bryant Perrella (14-0) vs. Yordenis Ugas (16-3) 10 rounds- welterweights Co-Main Event: Ryan Kral (12-0) vs. Jose Felix Quezada (11-0) 8 rounds- super featherweights Additional Bouts: Brandon Holmes (8-0) vs. Gene Perez (15-1) 6 rounds- super featherweights, Antonio Martinez (5-2) vs. Edgar Zubia 4 rounds- super lightweights, Bryant McClain (2-0) vs. Ivan Miranda (debut) 4 rounds-lightweights, Aaron Martinez (2-0) vs. George Roybal (0-1) 4 rounds lightweights. According to a spokesperson for TR, ticket sales are brisk and prices start at $50.00. That means 4 p.m. for bowlegged pilgrims who use a sun dial to tell time. Our caustic remark is a result of waiting multiple times for fighters to arrive.
