PACQUIAO UPDATE! By Salven L. Lagumbay PhilBoxing.com Sun, 19 Aug 2007 Filipino boxing icon Manny Pacquiao is set to enter the most punishing part of his training starting next week when he starts the hard grind with thrice weekly sparring sessions supervised by Freddie Roach at the Rex 'Wakee' Salud gym in Cebu. This as three imported sparring partners are set to touch down on a Philippine Airlines flight in Cebu today from Los Angeles, with the mission of helping Pacquiao get into the best possible shape going into his much-awaited return bout with legendary Mexican warrior Marco Antonio Barrera on October 6 at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. Sparmates Arrive Today "Yes, the sparmates are arriving tomorrow (today). They will be here around 10AM," informed Salud in an interview yesterday. Salud, in keeping with Pacquiao's focus in training, will close down his gym from Monday to Friday every week to avoid outside distractions, allowing only the media some access. Saturday's will be open to the public, said the boxing promoter. In fact, Pacquiao is so focused on his training he has asked Salud to cancel what would have been a trip to Japan yesterday to be at ringside for his ward Jojo Bardon who is defending his OPBF title today. (Related story) "I have decided to cancel my trip. I am going to make sure both Manny and Freddie are both well taken care of while they are here in Cebu," explained Salud, who is organizing a press conference on Monday for both Pacquiao and returning WBO bantamweight champion Gerry Penalosa at the Marriott Hotel. "Patayan Time" Is Here! Pacquiao started his day early in the morning yesterday, running ten times around the AsiaTown IT Park just across the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel where they are billeted. "Manny's conditioning is just about fine. He has a special nutritionist with him in Jojo Sta. Teresa," said Fernandez in an interview yesterday. The afternoon workout was supervised by Roach, which consisted of the usual shadow-boxing (4 rounds) before the American trainer held the mitts for eight rounds against Pacquiao. The mitt session was followed by two rounds at the double-end bag, six minutes at the speedball, eigth minutes on the skipping rope, and the usual loosening exercises. Today, there will be no off day for the iconic fighter, as he plans to run in the morning at the Alta Vista Golf and Country Club. "Patayan dito ngayon. Eto yung punto na bakbakan na kami sa training," said Fernandez. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Salven L. Lagumbay. |
