MEL BAKER CHASES QLD TITLE ON DEBUT PhilBoxing.com Thu, 18 Aug 2016  TOOWOOMBA'S MEL BAKER WILL MAKE HER PRO DEBUT in Brisbane on Saturday night challenging April Adams for the Queensland female super bantamweight title. Adams is the current champion having won the belt against Julie Livet in June. The bout will be staged over six rounds at Eaton Hills on Angelo DiCarlo's card headlined by Trent Broadhurst vs American Shawn Miller. "I'm really excited to make my pro debut," Mel Baker said. "I've really enjoyed my time in the amateurs and now feel ready to step into the pro ranks. "A big thanks to Angelo DiCarlo for the opportunity, it'll be a big thrill to fight on one of his cards. "Also a huge thanks to my manager Brendon Smith for making this all happen. "It's a big challenge in front of me, April has four fights under her belt in the pro's and I have zero. "However this is a great opportunity and one I couldn't pass up. "I give up pro experience but the training I've done in the gym with and around pro's my entire amateur career should hold me in good stead for this one. "It's a dream come true just to make my pro debut, let alone win a Queensland title on debut. "That's what I'm hoping for and that's what I'll be giving my all to achieve on Saturday night." It won't be the first meeting between the pair. They clashed three times in the amateurs and Adams had her hand raised three times. "Hopefully I can reverse that result in the pro's," Baker said. "I definitely believe the longer rounds of the pro ranks suit me a lot better than the amateurs. "From our three meetings in the amateurs I have an idea of how she fights so that's an advantage but she has the same advantage. "I'm a different fighter from the one she beat in the amateurs and hopefully that shows on Saturday night. "I have huge respect for April Adams, she's a great champion but I have faith in my ability and the work I've put in with Brendon, Corb, Bertie, Stevie as well as all of my gym team mates. "Hopefully my best is good enough to win the title."  |
