?Gringo? Jerusalem takes on WBC International light flyweight champ Jonathan Refugio on IDOL 2

PhilBoxing.com

IDOL 2 co-headliner Melvin ?Gringo? Jerusalem from Bukidnon puts his undefeated record at stake, as he takes on fellow Bukidnon native and current WBC International Light Flyweight Champion Jonathan Refugio who seized the title early this year in an unexpected win over defending champion Richard Claveras.

Claveras, who boasted 12 knockouts out of his 14 wins, with only one loss to former world champion Pedro Guevarra, had the upper hand against challenger Refugio not only because of his fight record, but with the height and reach difference too. Claveras stood at 5?6? while Refugio was at 5?1 ??. But according to veteran writer Ronnie Nathanielsz from The Manila Standard, Refugio came to the fight with the perfect fight plan, ?(he) darted in and out with quick combinations to befuddle Claveras who appeared to depend on his one-punch power to try and score a knockout but failed to connect with any of his big shots as Refugio used his quickness to stay out of range and thwart Claveras?.

Nathanielsz wrote, ?Claveras tried desperately to turn the fight around in the championship rounds as he chased Refugio with occasional combinations anchored on body shots but Refugio stole several rounds with late, counter-punching flurries and occasionally smiled as he nailed Claveras with rapid-fire combinations anchored on an overhand right.? When the scores were announced, Nathanielsz said the fans that were cheering the little challenger during the match gave him a standing ovation.

Coming off from such an impressive win, Refugio is confident going into the fight against Jerusalem next month.

ALA Promotions International's IDOL 2 takes stage at the Mandaue City Sports and Cultural Complex on July 16th.
