TOOWOOMBA TAKES ON THE WORLD

PhilBoxing.com

IT'S SET TO BE TOOWOOMBA VS THE WORLD IN THE NEXT FEW MONTHS. From China to New Zealand and South Africa our garden city talent is set to take centre stage.

IBO super featherweight World Champion Jack Asis headlines the list defending his title in South Africa against Malcolm Klassen in Johannesburg on July 29.

Asis is Australia's sole World Champion at present and will be making his first defence.

"I think that's important to highlight - we believe Jack Asis is Australia's only current World Champion," Brendon Smith said.

"This is a huge stage and the biggest fight of Jack's career.

"This bout puts our home city of Toowoomba on the World stage once again."

Asis added: "I'm very proud to represent Toowoomba on the World stage.

"I will leave Toowoomba as the World Champion and I hope to return home as the World Champion."

Continuing the International flavour is Kris George.

George, trained by Toowoomba's Craig Monagle, will fight undefeated Kiwi prospect Bowyn Morgan in New Zealand on July 21.

The eight round welterweight bout is on the undercard of the Duco promotion headlined by Joseph Parker vs Solomon Haumono. It's set to be televised on Main Event in Australia and broadcast across the World.

"This is another great fight putting Toowoomba on the international stage," Smith said.

"Bowyn Morgan is highly regarded and promoted by Duco so what an opportunity for Kris George to announce himself on the World stage."

Capping off a big few months on International shores heavyweight Herman Ene-Purcell is scheduled to fight in Beijing, China on June 24 on a Liu Gang promotion.

Ene-Purcell will meet Jong Suk Lee in a four round contest on the undercard of the WBA dual World title show headlined by Javier Fortuna's title defence against American Jason Sosa.

The card is again going to put Toowoomba on the map, the promotion is already a sell out and it will be televised into all of China, a majority of Asia, Russia,Germany and the USA.

Adding to the Toowoomba interest in this promotion James O'Shea has been chosen as the English speaking ring announcer for the card.

"We're all really happy for James, this is a massive stage and I know he will shine," Smith said.

"We've always said he's the best ring announcer in Australia now the rest of the World will see why.

"It's also a massive stage for Herman.

"A win on a card of this magnitude will boost his stocks immensely.

"It's great to continue the relationship with Liu Gang who is quickly making China a massive player on the World boxing stage.

"We're forever grateful to be a part of and can't thank Liu enough."

Herman Ene-Purcell added: "I'm very humbled by this opportunity and I'm going to take it with both hands.

"Thanks to Brendon Smith for making these opportunities for us.

"Not just me, but Kris George and Jack Asis - it's quite a feat for all three of us to be fighting on big international shows.

"I'm forever grateful for the work he puts in.

"Now it's up to us to return the favour and perform to the best of our abilities when we get in the ring.

"I'm sure we all will.

"For my fight it's also become even more special with James O'Shea ring announcing the card.

"I look forward to being on the international stage representing Toowoomba with James and Brendon by my sides.

"That's really special."

While there is plenty happening on the International stage its also set to be a busy period for Toowoomba fighters on the national stage.

Sammy 'Automatic' Williams heads to Melbourne on July 1 to take on Shaun Thomas for the vacant Australian super featherweight title.

It's a re-match between Williams and Thomas after they clashed for the Victorian title on April 30.

Williams was successful on that occasion by unanimous decision and now has the chance to win the National title recently vacated by the retired Will Young.

Closer to home Steven 'Lightning' Spark has signed on to face Mark Ramirez in Brsbane on August 20 for the Queensland light welter weight title.

"It's an exciting time for local boxers with so many big fights coming up," Brendon Smith said.

"Once again all will be proudly representing Toowoomba.

"There is no better feeling than hearing the ring announcer announce the words 'from Toowoomba' when we fight away - whether that be some where else in Queensland, other parts of Australia or over seas.

"It's something special for us."
