WILLIAMS EARNS OZ TITLE SHOT

PhilBoxing.com

SAMMY WILLAMS GETS A SHOT AT THE AUSTRALIAN TITLE.

NEWLY CROWNED VICTORIAN STATE CHAMPION SAMMY 'AUTOMATIC' WILLIAMS now has his eyes on a bigger title. Williams has signed on for a rematch with Shaun Thomas on July 1 in Melbourne with the victor to earn the Australian super featherweight belt which was recently vacated by the retiring Will Young.

"This is the biggest opportunity of my career," Williams said.

"The Australian title is the most prestigious prize in the country and I'm honoured to fight for it.

"Making it even more special - it's the same title Will Young held until his retirement.

Williams, who has a four win, two draws and one loss, pro record defeated Thomas in May by unanimous decision to win the Victorian State super featherweight title.

"It was a great fight," Brendon Smith said.

"I have no doubt the re-match will be the same.

"Shaun Thomas is a good fighter and I have no doubt he will be harder to beat this time around.

"With that in mind, we need to be better as well.

"We will work on a few things and be ready come July one.

"This is a huge opportunity for Sammy and one he's earned through years of hard work.

"We had quite the reception when we walked back into Wellcamp Airport with the Victorian title, I can only imagine what it will be like if Sammy returns with the Australian belt around his waist."

The first bout between the pair was a thriller going the full eight rounds. Williams scored a decisive knock down in the third round which proved crucial when it came down to the judges score cards.

"I'll put in the work in the gym and give myself every chance to win the bout," Williams said.

"I learnt plenty from our first bout and I think I can fight better again this time.

"I'll give it my all and hopefully that's good enough to win.

"This is the biggest challenge of my career - but a challenge I believe I'm equal to."

"I hope to keep the belt in Toowoomba.

"A big thanks to my manager Brendon Smith and Victorian Promoter Barry Michael for giving me this opportunity.

"I loved fighting on Barry's show in May and can't wait to go back."
