MAASIN-BORN RODY DUTERTE PROCLAIMED PRESIDENT-ELECT AND IS A CERTIFIED SPORTSMAN

PhilBoxing.com

With the highest number of votes of 16,601,997 and highest winning margin of 6,623,822 in Philippine presidential election history, Davao City Mayor Rodrigo "Rody" Duterte was proclaimed duly elected President by the Joint Houses of Congress together with Vice President-elect Leni Robredo. Born in Maasin City, Southern Leyte, he is our pride and even won in our city through a machinery of volunteers. We could not campaign for him openly because we filed under the Liberal Party, Duterte being a late comer in the presidential race. But we believed in his fight against criminality especially illegal drugs. He vouched for a smoke-free Philippines which is similar to our Anti-Smoking Program in Maasin City.

President-elect Rody had broached the idea of creating a Department of Sports, instead of the separate Philippine Sports Commission and Games and Amusements Board and the Bureau of Physical Education and School Sports under the Department of Education. He loves boxing and he had a boxing patron and sportsman of a Cabinet member in former Gov. Manny Pinol. He created a Sports Development Division under the Davao City Mayor?s Office whose head William ?Butch? Ramirez is the former PSC chair. He lauded Duterte's all-out support to sports development. ?Mayor Duterte has always been an advocate of sports promotion and champion of the athletes,? Ramirez said. Duterte watched the Manny Pacquiao vs. Brandon Rios fight in Macau and has always been a boxing fan.

Golden State Warriors lived another day by edging the Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 6 of the Western Conference Finals, 108-101. Klay Thompson scored a playoff record breaking 11 3-pointers to resurrect the Warriors from the brink of elimination. With an even 3-3 standings, the defending champions are heavily favored to clinch the Finals slot tomorrow at their own homecourt at Oracle Arena in Oakland, California. Stephen Curry took charge in the fourth quarter with crucial baskets, steals and treys showing why he is NBA's two-time MVP. Oklahoma fans couldn't believe the action unfolding before their very eyes which in an instant reversed an almost sure win in the last two minutes of play. From a 1-3 deficit, the Golden State played like real Warriors, fighting to the last drop of their blood, showing why they broke the regular season record of most wins at 73.

WBO junior flyweight champion Donnie "Ahas" Nietes may face WBA Super flyweight champion and WBO flyweight champion Juan Francisco Estrada as announced by ALA Promotios President CEO Michael Aldeguer. Estrada who has a record of 33-2 with 24 KO's, had defeated Filipino-Hawaiian Brian Villoria. His two defeats were dealt by Roman "Chocolatito" Gonzalez and Juan Carlos Sanchez Jr. But the clash with mandatory challenger Moises Fuentes has already been set on September 24 at the StubHub Center, Carson City, California. The third fight may not be that interesting anymore like that of Pacquiao-Bradley III. Nietes drew with Fuentes in the first fight and won by KO in the 9th round in the second encounter. Nietes is also The Ring flyweight champion while Fuentes is rated No. 10.
