NEW CHALLENGER NEEDED FOR JACK ASIS' WORLD TITLE

PhilBoxing.com

ASIS HUNTS NEW CHALLENGER

IBO SUPER FEATHER WEIGHT WORLD CHAMPION JACK ASIS needs a new challenger for his title after Russian Vyachselav Gusev was forced to withdraw from their agreed August bout due to injury.

Gusev, who is 22-3, sustained a broken rib in training.

"I received confirmation this morning from Gusev's promoter that he has suffered a serious rib injury in training so therefore the scheduled bout between Jack and Gusev is off," Asis' Trainer/Manager Brendon Smith said.

"It's disappointing news, but that's boxing - injuries happen.

Asis is coming off an impressive points win over Waylon Law in his last fight on May 13 when he won the very first special Brayd Smith World United Championship belt.

"Jack is on top of the World and we want to stay that way." Brendon Smith said.

"Those camps in America and South Africa were keen on the bout when we had the agreement in place to fight Gusev.

"Both camps are headed by fantastic promoters and I'm happy to talk with them once again and see if we can make this a reality.

"We want an IBO World title defence, Jack is in one corner - who will be in the other?

"That's the question I'm hoping to have answered sooner rather than later.

"There are a number of ranked fighters in the IBO division - if they want a shot at the title, the window of opportunity is now open."

"Now we have to move on and we need a challenger for Jack's belt.

"Is there any contender in the World who wants a shot at the title - that's what I'm going to find out in the next few weeks."

"After the agreement was in place a few months back to meet Gusev in August I also received offers from a camp in America and another in South Africa.

"Because of the agreement in place to meet Gusev, those talks didn't progress any further.

"Now we can re-open those talks.

"We also haven't hidden from the fact we have interest in taking on fellow Australians Billy Dib and Will Tomlinson.

"We are ready to defend, now it's time for the contenders to stand up and meet the challenge of facing Toowoomba's IBO World Champion Jack Asis."

Jack Asis, who won the belt from Kye Mackenzie in April last year was philosophical about the news.

"That's boxing," Asis said.

"Injuries are a part of the sport.

"I was looking forward to defending my title against Gusev, but it's not to be.

"I wish Gusev all the best with his recovery, he's a great fighter and I wish him all the best with his career.

"Now I will leave it in the hands of my manager Brendon Smith, he will take care of everything.

"Whether it's some one from South Africa, America, Australia - anywhere mate, I'm ready to defend my belt."
