NESTHY PETECIO DRAWS A BYE, FACES JAPANESE CHAMPION MADO KAWADA IN NEXT ROUND

The Philippines best prospect for a chance at qualifying for a slot in the Rio Olympic female boxing competition Nesthy Petecio drew a bye in the opening round of the World Women?s Championship in Astana, Kazakhstan and will face Japanese champion Mado Kawada who defeated her top rivals in the Japanese Women?s National Championships held in Osaka.
Wada defeated teenager Kasumi Saeki in the finals with Saeki reportedly not in the best shape to overcome Wada in the gold medal bout.
Japanese media said Wada is the lone Japanese woman boxer who could win a medal in the AIBA Women?s World Boxing Championships after she won a bronze medal in Jeju, South Korea among the elite athletes.
The 20 year old Wada defeated her younger teammate Saeki and has got the chance to represent Japan in the main event in 2016.
But she will have to contend with Petecio whom the coaching staff believes is the Philippines best prospect unless she is again a victim of a bum decision as was the case in China when she dropped a hugely controversial decision to India?s five-time world champion Mary Kom.
Light flyweight Josie Gabuco will clash with Bulgaria?s Sevda Asenova while bantamweight Irish Magno will face Mongolia?s Dolortuul Tumurkhuyag on May 20 in the afternoon session.
