PACQUIAO-MAYWEATHER REMATCH MORE LIKELY THAN NOT

PhilBoxing.com

Top Rank promoter Bob Arum who handles eight division world champion Manny Pacquiao, believes a rematch with undefeated pound for pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr who has since retired is much more likely to happen.

TMZ Sports quoted Arum who said a rematch with Floyd Mayweather is "more likely than not" ... but concedes there are still some serious obstacles to overcome.

While Mayweather retired after his last fight with Andre Berto last September 12 and Pacquiao announced his retirement after a dominant performance against Timothy ?Desert Storm? Bradley in their third fight last April 9, Manny left the door open for possibly one more fight especially if its against Mayweather Jr.
Their first highly publicized ?Fight of the Century? last May 2 which was a letdown generated over half a billion dollars and a record 4.6 million pay-per-view buys.

TMZ spoke with Top Rank's CEO Bob Arum who said the rematch "It's close to 50/50 but probably leaning more toward the fight happening ... more likely than not."

Arum said he hasn't spoken with Manny or Floyd specifically about the rematch ? but says, "If the match was available, I believe [Manny] would come back for that match."

Arum also says he knows Showtime, who work very closely with Mayweather, have serious interest in a Pacquiao rematch -- and that's an important component to making the fight happen. Their pay-per-view last May was handled by a joint partnership between
rival networks Showtime and HBO.

So, what are the obstacles? For starters, both guys claim they're retired ... with Manny focusing on a bid for a Senate seat in the Philippine presidential elections in May and Floyd focusing on promoting his fighters.

But Arum says, "If either man agrees to fight, my feeling is that they won't be able to resist."

Mayweather?s strength and conditioning coach Alex Ariza told The Standard when the possibility of a rematch first surfaced that ?it makes sense because they will make good money. Assuming they do half the 4.5 million pay per view buys that?s a lot of money for both these guys.?

Ariza told us he had the feeling that Mayweather was ?getting bored? and that it may well drive him to return and go for the chance to break the 49-0 unbeaten streak of the late heavyweight champion Rocky Marciano.
