Unbeaten 20 year old Japanese Kosei Tanaka (6-0, 3 KO?s) has announced he will relinquish his WBO 105 pound title in his quest for a title shot at the longest reigning Filipino world champion, reigning WBO light flyweight champion Donnie Nietes sometime in the future.
Tanaka?s manager/promoter, former WBC super bantamweight champion Kiyoshi Hatanaka made the announcement about giving up the title and said the quest for a Nietes title fight will begin with a bout against the Philippines No.1 ranked Rene ?Mr. Nice Guy? Patilano who is rated No. 9 by the IBF in a fight in Nagoya, Japan on May 28.
Tanaka won the vacant 105 pound title with a unanimous twelve round decision over Julian Yedras of Mexico on May 30, 2015 and successfully defended the title with a 6th round knockout of Filipino Vic Saludar on December 31 last year.
The 24 year old Patilano won his last eight bouts with one majority draw against reigning WBA light flyweight Interim champion Randy Petalcorin in a Pan Asia Boxing Association title fight following a split decision loss to Jaymar Estremos over eight rounds on July 24, 2012.
