BOXING GREATS FETED TODAY IN ELORDE MEMORIAL AWARDS PhilBoxing.com Tue, 29 Mar 2016  The boxing heroes of the past ? from 2015 to the early years of the post-war era ? will receive the highest distinction in pro boxing tonight in the 16th Gabriel "Flash" Elorde Memorial Awards and Banquet of Champions at the Sofitel Hotel Grand Ballroom brought to you by Johnny Elorde Management International in cooperation with PCSO, COBRA, Hapee Toothpaste, Contour Rehabilitation & Wellness, Southpaw Bar & Grill, Sofitel Hotel, Cast & Frame and the Elorde Sports Center. Champions of 2015, led by world light flyweight champions Rey Loreto and Randy Petalcorin, will be conferred the Boxer of the Year awards while five-division titleholder Nonito Donaire and still undefeated world champion Donnie Nietes will have a permanent place in the elite circle of all-time boxing heroes in the "casting of the fists", a major highlight this year's awards rites. They will be joined by retired champions Gerry Penalosa (WBO bantamweight), Rolando Navarette (WBC super featherweight), Rene Barrientos (WBC super featherweight), Erbito Salavarria (WBC flyweight) and Ronnie Magramo (WBF minimum weight). Eight-division champion Manny Pacquiao will not join this year's first batch in the "casting of the fists" as he is currently training in the US for his upcoming bout with Timothy Bradley. Laura Elorde, wife of the boxing legend, will lead the Elorde clan in conferring the highest honors in professional boxing as well as to 2015 international and Philippine champions in various weight categories. World Boxing Council president Mauricio Sulaiman has been invited to be the guest of honor and speaker in the formal awards rites and Banquet of Champions, held for the 16th straight year in commemoration of the birth anniversary of Flash Elorde, undisputed world junior lightweight champion from 1960-67 and the only Filipino enshrined in both the world and international Hall of Fame. Awards of distinction will also be given to the best referee (Danrex Tapdasan), best trainer (Nonito Donaire, Sr.), most promising boxer (Jonathan Taconing and Mark Magsayo ) and best fight of the year (OPBF championship fight between Taconing and Joemar Fajardo), and other personalities who contributed to the promotion of boxing. The Lope "Papa" Pascual Sarreal achievement award will be bestowed on promoter Michael Aldeguer. Citations will be given to DZSR Sports Radio, Ryan Songalia of Rappler, Promoter Naris Singwancha, Contour Rehabilitation & Wellness, Pinoy Pride while a special award will be given to former OPBF Champion Socrates Batoto. Also highlighting the Awards Night is a big boxing promotion featuring two Elorde grandsons ? Juan Martin (Bai) Elorde and Juan Miguel "The Boss" Elorde ? who will be pitted against tough Indonesian fighters in a boxing card held before the awarding ceremonies at 4:00 in the afternoon.
