ASIS VS LAW: Second blockbuster added to May 13 Toowoomba card

PhilBoxing.com

WORLD CHAMP JACK ASIS TO TAKE ON WBC CHAMP

IBO Super feather weight champion Jack Asis to fight Waylon Law on May 13 at Toowoomba.

IBO SUPER FEATHER WEIGHT WORLD CHAMPION JACK ASIS makes his first move towards a lightweight World title shot stepping up to take on WBC Asian Boxing Council Continental light weight champion Waylon Law on May 13 at Rumours International, Toowoomba.

Law and Asis have both signed to fight a 10 rounder at the catch weight of 60kgs.

"I'm very excited to announce this match up," Brendon Smith said.

"It's a perfect fight for both Waylon and Jack.

"Waylon was scheduled to meet Corey McConnell who is number 12 in the world, with that fight falling through now he has a shot against a current world champion.

"Jack Asis wants to move up to lightweight so what better challenge than taking on the WBC Asian Boxing Council Continental title holder."

It ends months of frustration and negotiation for Jack Asis and his team.

"Jack has been very hard to place," Brendon Smith said.

"We've chased guys like Billy Dib, Will Tomlinson, Corey McConnell as well as several other super featherweights across the World ranked under Jack in the IBO.

"For one reason or another we haven't been able to lock in a bout.

"We're moving forwards and hence the possibility of moving to light weight.

"Waylon Law at a 60kg catch weight is a perfect stepping stone for us."

It's also a big opportunity for Deception Bay's Waylon Law.

Not only does he have the chance to defeat a World Champion, he also has the opportunity to be the first Australian based boxer to beat Jack Asis since 2011.

Law's trainer Damien Smith firmly believes his fighter has the upperhand at the bigger weight.

"We believe Jack is worried about stepping up to lightweight because they want this bout at a 60kg catch weight," Damien Smith said.

"I know Jack is the current IBO super featherweight world champion but Waylon is no stranger to the spotlight.

"Waylon was involved in the 2014 Foxtel fight of year, he's proven he can deliver on the big stage.

"We're also one up on Smithy's TGW gym after Waylon scored a unanimous decision victory over Tom Ford, who was cornered by Brendon Smith that night.

"He won that fight with a broken hand and a torn bi-cep so Waylon has a high pain threshold that's why he's a great champion.

"We look forward to being in Toowoomba on May 13 and getting a win.

"After this fight I think the Jack Asis camp will re-think their decision to move up to light weight."
