FRAMPTON BEATS QUIGG, ADDS WBA BELT TO IBF CROWN

PhilBoxing.com

Carl Frampton beat Scott Quigg to add the WBA belt to his IBF crown with two of the three judges giving Frampton the nod 116-112 while the third judge had Quigg the winner 115-113 in a scorecard that was bitterly criticized by Frampton and his handlers.

Sky Sports in Britain reported that Frampton controlled the early rounds with a disciplined display although Quigg felt his late aggression should have earned him the decision.

The pro-Frampton Irish fans gave Quigg a harsh welcome and roared Frampton into the ring and kept singing and chanting after the decision was announced.

Frampton, nicknamed "The Jackal" tried to set the tone with his jab in the second round and Quigg was inches away from landing a looping hook in the closing seconds and while Frampton moved forward behind his jab, Quigg cleverly countered with a solid hook in the third.

Sky Sports said Frampton was dictating the cagey early stages with occasional bursts of punches, although Quigg answered with a crisp right hand in the fourth.

Watching from the corner, trainer Joe Gallagher offered stern advice to Quigg after Frampton appeared to pocket the fifth with that accurate jab.

A jolting uppercut briefly stopped Quigg in his tracks during the sixth, but he continued to move forward and tried to bully his opponent to the ropes in the seventh.

Sky Sports reported Quigg was finally knocking Frampton out of his confident stride, ripping a hook through his defenses in the eighth as he unloaded more clubbing punches on the Northern Irishman in the ninth.

Sensing the closeness of the cards, both stood and traded in the 10th, and the crowd roared in approval as Quigg and Frampton exchanged vicious punches in close quarter combat.

Quigg welcomed the dogfight and unravelled Frampton's defences with a big overhand right before ramming more punches on his dazed foe in the 11th.

Into the last, Frampton stepped neatly away from danger and countered with a cluster of punches as Quigg charged forward in search of a telling blow but it turned out to be too little, too late.
