ACTION-PACKED SUNDAY FOR BOXING FANS

PhilBoxing.com

Boxing fans will savor an action-packed Sunday even as the big Philippine networks wage a war for recognition and television audiences outside the ring.

The giant broadcast network ABS-CBN will telecast “live” the blockbuster fight card “Coming to Fight” from the Mandalay Bay Resort Hotel and Casino featuring what promises to be an epic battle between “The Executioner” Bernard Hopkins and the classy southpaw Winky Wright beginning at 9:30 a.m. Sunday.

But what is bound to have Filipinos glued to Channel 2 is the exciting undercard in which WBO Asia Pacific lightweight champion Czar Amonsot, the southpaw from Tagbiliaran City, Bohol clashes with one of today’s most exciting fighters, WBO interim champion and knockout artist Michael Katsidis while popular former world super bantamweight champion Oscar “Chololo” Larios takes on undefeated Venezuelan sensation Jorge Linares for the WBC interim featherweight title.

The added attraction would certainly be newly crowned IBF flyweight champion Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire who will be special studio guest during the ABS-CBN coverage. Donaire is scheduled to arrive Saturday morning from Los Angeles as guest of the network. He is also scheduled to be featured on former Sen. Freddie Webb’s extremely popular show on dzMM Radio at 2:00 p.m. the same day.

Meantime, Donaire’s sensational fifth round knockout of cocky Australian Vic Darchinyan will be telecast by Solar Sports over GMA 7 at 10:00 a.m. and simulcast over the Solar Sports cable channel in a head-to-head conflict with the “live” coverage of ABS-CBN which may be regarded as a regrettable reflection of the network war. The Donaire-Darchinyan title fight will also be replayed over RPN 9 at 4:00 p.m.

The network ratings battle will, in the end, force fight fans to choose whether to watch the "live" coverage on ABS-CBN or the Donaire-Darchinyan fight which took place last July 8. However, fight fans can opt to get the best of both world by catching the "live' coverage on ABS-CBN with Donaire as studio guest and then watch the replay of his fight on RPN 9 at 4:00 p.m. Many fight fans who have seen the Donaire-Darchinyan fight which has been often shown on various internet sites will certainly wish to watch in on free TV or cable.

Viva Sports top rated weekly boxing show “The Main Event” will add to the fistic feast by telecasting the WBO flyweight title fight between Rexon Flores and champion Omar Narvaes of Argentina at 1:00 p.m. over RPN 9.

Later in the day at 7:00 p.m. “In this Corner” will telecast the IBF minimum weight championship bout in which the Philippines hard-hitting southpaw Florante ”The Little Pacquiao” Condes won the crown in an exciting twelve round war with Indonesia’s Muhammad Rachman.
