INTERNATIONAL Master Oliver ?Dimaks? Dimakiling of Davao City lived up to his billing by capturing his fifth title in the 8th Kidapawan Open Chess Tournament held over the weekend at the Kidapawan Convention Center in Kidapawan City.

The 32-year old Dimakiling only needed a draw in the 7th and final round against NM Bob Jones Liwagon of Cotabato to score 6.5 points and pocket the P15,000 cash prize plus a trophy.

Dimakiling, who also won the crown from 2012 to 2015, started his title-retention bid by crushing World University Games veteran Mary Israel Palero of Davao in the opening round. He then trounced Allen Milano, Perkins Bayron, John Gerald Aceron, former US-based Peter Tidoy and Jason Salubre in that order.

?Magandang simula ito sa bagong taon. Lalo na?t sa Year of the Monkey din ako ipinanganak,? said Dimakiling, who is now also visiting his parents and siblings in Davao.

?Bonus na lang talaga kung manalo ako dahil binibisita ko rin talaga ang mga magulang ko at mga kapatid sa Davao,? said Dimakiling, who also thanked the invitation from organizers Atty. Dan Calica and Dr. Ted Calica, president of the host Kidapawan Chess Club.

Dimakiling will next see action in the Bobby Pacquiao Random Chess tournament slated Feb. 19-26 in General Santos City and the HD Bank International Open on March 7-14 in Vietnam.

Liwagon finished for second place with 5.5 points to bring home P10,000 and a trophy. Liwagon won in a tiebreak against Jun Mark Baldesimo (5.5) of Digos City and Rhynan Arce (5.5) of Cotabato, who settled third and fourth, respectively.

Baldesimo got P5,000 a trophy while Arce earned P3,000 plus a medal.

The 5th to 10th placers were Kidapawan?s Philip John Leyson (5.0), Davao?s Harrison Maamo (5.0), John Gerard Acedo (5.0), Panabo?s Jason Salubre (4.5), General Santos City?s Ferdinand Leysa (4.5) and Davao?s NM Macacuna Macala (4.5).

Meanwhile, Davao?s Francis Xavier Guimalan scored 5.0 points to rule the 15 year old and Under category to pocket P3,000 and a medal. Kidapawan?s Danny Panaligan Jr. (5.0) and Davao?s Kurt John Placencia (4.5) placed second and third, respectively. ? LITO DELOS REYES
