PACMAN STARTS TRAINING FOR 3rd BRADLEY FIGHT By Tonton Alcos-Antogop PhilBoxing.com Mon, 25 Jan 2016 GENERAL SANTOS CITY- Manny Pacquiao has already started his training regimen for his scheduled April 9 third setto with Timothy Bradley at the MGM Grand. The eight division world title holder revealed that he decided to make a longer training because he has to get back to rhythm after a long lay-off in boxing. He last fought in May 2 last year where he lost a unanimous decision against Floyd Mayweather. Pacquiao suffered a torn right shoulder rotator cuff before fight night but was not properly disclosed by his handlers. Pacquiao said he will be training for nine months for his third Bradley fight instead of eight. He arrived over the weekend here after their US press tour for the Bradley encounter. "We need enough time so we have to start early, nine weeks because of the long lay-off" Pacquiao told this writer in an exclusive interview. He did his morning jog for approximately four kms. (10 rounds around the 400 meters track oval) inside the Antonio Acharon Memorial Sports Complex. After the short run, he did some sit ups and stretching with assistant coach Roger "Haplas" Fernandez (Pacquiao immediately proceeded to his favorite eatery "Gamay Eatery" owned by Cesar "Gamay" Garaygay in Calumpang to take breakfast after his light training). After his light training, Manny Pacquiao, proceeded to his favorite eatery in Gensan, owned by Cesar Garaygay (standing at the back of Pacquiao) Asked whether he had difficulty in his first day of training, the Filipino boxing phenom said he did not because he has been playing basketball after his shoulder surgery was healed. Orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Neal ElAttrache performed the operation on Pacquiao and has just issued a medical clearance on the Filipino boxer for the third fight with Bradley (33-1-1-13 K.O.). Even while he has been inactive in the ring, Pacquiao (57-6-2-38 K.O) is playing basketball almost every night in his gym inside his sprawling Pacman mansion-2 at Barangay (Village) City Heights. "I did ten rounds in the oval and had no difficulty because I have been playing basketball." According to Pacquiao, he will have a month long training in Gensan, alternating his road work, with his gym workout inside his MP Wildcard gym fronting the city's SM shopping mall. Assistant coach Restituto "Boboy" Fernandez, the elder brother of Roger, will administer his training until the 2nd week of February where head coach Freddie Roach will arrive from the U.S.A. Meanwhile, Pacquiao reiterated his decision to retire from boxing after the Bradley fight. He said he will focus on public service. He is not seeking reelection as Sarangani congressman but instead is running for "senator" (his younger brother Ruel, will run in his stead) in the forthcoming May 9, 2016 elections under the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA). Another presidential candidate Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte is adopting him in its senatorial line-up. According to Pacquiao, he would like either Binay or Duterte to win. Pacquiao and Bradley first fought last June 9, 2012 which became controversial because Bradley won in split decision despite Pacquiao"s clear dominance of the match. A five man panel of international judges saw Pacquiao as the victor but the decision was not reversed. They had a rematch last April 2, 2014, also at the MGM Grand where Pacquiao won by unanimous decision. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Tonton Alcos-Antogop. |
