BOXING REVOLUTION 4: IT?S A DRAW FOR DEMECILLO, DAPUDONG

PhilBoxing.com

THE much-awaited title-fight between reigning WBF Asia Pacific bantamweight champion Kenny ?Singwancha? Demecillo of Cebu and challenger Edrin ?The Sting? Dapudong of Cotabato ended up in a controversial split draw Saturday night at the Almendras gym in Davao City.

Judge Sabas Ponpon Jr. scored it 97-93 for Dapudong while judge Brembot Dulalas gave it to Demecillo at 96-94. But the other judge Romeo Fordaliza saw it 95-all for a split draw.

Demecillo, 23, retained his title but did not go home with the new championship belt since it was only a draw according to WBF representative Jimmy Mata.

?Daug dyud ko sa iyaha maski beterano siya. Sugot pud ko ug rematch,? said Demecillo, who now has 2 draws with 10 wins and 3 loses.

Demecillo?s coach Ping-Ping Tepura of Omega Boxing Gym, however, wants the possible rematch to be held in Cebu already.

The 29-year old Dapudong of the Sonshine Sports Management Inc., is willing for a rematch if the catch weight is already in his usual fighting weight at 115 pounds or in the super flyweight division.

?Gamay dyud ko kaayo sa bantam ug dapat sa 115 lang,? said Dapudong, a former IBO world super flyweight champion.

Dapudong traded punches toe to toe with Demecillo before he changed his game plan in the last two rounds by just jabbing and avoiding a close encounter with the champion.

It was the first title-defense by Demecillo of the vacant crown he won by an 8th round technical knockout against arch-rival Darryl Basadre last Sept. 26 at the Gaisano Mall in General Santos City.

Dapudong, who is now 37-6-1 previously fought and won by a second round knockout against Richard Garcia last June 26 also at the Almendras gym.

CASTROVERDE UPSETS VILLANUEVA

Youthful Jerry Castroverde of Cebu scored his biggest win with an upset victory over former WBO Oriental featherweight champion Lorenzo ?Thunderbolt? Villanueva via a 5th round technical knockout in the main supporting bout.

Villanueva, 28, suffered a deep cut on his left eye due to an accidental headbutt followed by a right jab from the 18-year old Castroverde in the 4th round.

?Pero dili man to headbutt. Kumo man dyud to siya (But it was not really a headbutt. It was really a fist),? said Castroverde, who improved his record to 7-2-0 record.

Villanueva, who got an inch sized cut suffered his only second loss against 35 wins and no draw with 24 knockouts. He got nasty cut and admitted he was really affected by losing too much weight from 135 to 129 pounds. It was different, however, for Castroverde, who climbed up from 126 to 129 lbs.

?Gusto nako kung mag rematch me dapat nasa 135 na sa akong timbang,? said Villanueva, whose only other loss was against Daud Yordan by a second round knockout in their battle for the vacant IBO world featherweight title on May 5, 2012 at the Marina Bay Sands Hotel, Singapore.

The ?Boxing Revolution 4: The Road to WBF Championship? was presented by the Sonshine Sports Management Inc. (SSMI) in coordination with the Sonshine Media Network Inc. (SMNI) and Jose Maria College.

It was sponsored by the City Government of Davao, Flying V Fuel, Abreeza Ayala Mall, Phoenix Petroleum and Proline Electrosystem and backed up by the Lyndon?s, Galilee Purified Drinking Water, Jasver Commercial, Omega Pain Killer, Red Bull Energy Drink and Pepsi, while the media partners are DXRD Sonshine Radio, Edge Davao, Sunstar Davao, Mindanao Times and Mindanao Daily Mirror.
