PACQUIAO RANDOM CHESS TOURNEY SLATED DEC 14-16 IN GENSAN

PhilBoxing.com

With the end in view to further develop and propagate the sport of chess among the Filipino youth, the MP Chess Players Organization in coordination with the National Chess Federation of the Philippines, has scheduled the Second Manny Pacquiao Random Chess Tournament on December 14 to 16 at the SM Mall in Genral Santos City.

The Nine-Round Swiss System, three-day championships is a fitting follow up of the very successful series held last year and will offer an eye-poppindg P1.5 million cash prize put up by eight-division world boxing champion Manny Pacquiao.

Tournament organizer Eugene Torre, the First Filipino and Asian chess Grandmaster, announced that plays will be in team and individual format and is open to all players who are members of good standing with the NCFP.

"Paticipating teams must have four regular players and one alternate," Torre, one time president of the NCFP who presently heads a group in search of young and fresh talents, said during Thurdsay's SCOOP on Air episode of the weekly program Tropang Bistag aired over radio station DZEC of the Eagle Broadcasting Corp.

"In the interest of leveling the playing field and to make matches more interesting and exciting, a team can only field one Grandmaster and one International Master in its roster. A team must average no more than an ELO rating 2100 based on the four higher rated players," Torre, once ranked eighth in the world by the International chess Federation (FIDE), stressed.

"Kapag open kasi sa ranking ang format, the tendency of participants is to get higher rated players para magkaroon ng undue advantage at mababawasan ang excitement," Torre explained.

"As in the words of Cong. Manny (Pacquiao) when he consented supporting the project he himself started last year, the main purpose of the ournament is to discover new chess talents and develop them into world-beaters kaya pinaganda namin ang format, especially in team competition," Torre told his interviewers.

"Laking pasasalamat nga namin na pumayag si Congressman na ituloy ang programa. Isa ang chess sa mga sports na kasalukuyang pinagkakaabalahan ni Congressman," Torre said, noting that, for some time now, Pacquiao has been spending his free time playing the game, four to five times in one setting.

"And it's not surprising. Kailangan din kasi ang chess sa boksing. Sa chess kasi, you have to capture and kill the king. Nakatutulong ang sport ma-develop and boxer's killer instinct," he stressed. "That's Cong. Manny has been successful in his chosen profession."

Winner of the team event will bring home P400,000, while P50,000 awaits the individual champion. Team runner up gets P220,000, while third place finisher is good for P130,000. Cash pot is spread to the 50th finishers.

Registration fee per team is P2,000 and P200 for individual. Deadline of the submission of entries is December 7.

Those interested can get in touch with Torre via email: eugenetorre@rocketmail.com or National Master Roel Abelgas at abelgasroelalcana@gmail.com.
