VARGAS DEFEATS MIURA IN A DRAMATIC 9TH ROUND STOPPAGE
PhilBoxing.com Sun, 22 Nov 2015

LAS VEGAS ? In what was clearly the best fight on the undercard of the Cotto-Canelo middleweight lineal title fight, undefeated Francisco Vargas of Mexico City wrested the WBC world super featherweight title from Takashi Miura of Japan with a dramatic come from behind stoppage of the game former champion at the Mandalay Events Center here Saturday night.
Vargas (23-0-1, 17KO) started like a house on fire, using his speed and boxing skill, pummeled Miura in the first three rounds that almost sent the Japanese champion to the canvas. In the fourth round, however, Miura connected with his power shots that turned the fight around, sending the Vargas to the canvas with a powerful left straight. Miura kept on connecting in the succeeding rounds with body shots and with his patented left straight, disfigured the right side of Vargas's face inflicting cuts on the lower and upper side of Vargas's right eye up until the end of the 8th round that saw Vargas almost sent to the canvas again.
In a dramatic 9th round, right from the bell, Vargas connected 35 power shots beginning with a solid left uppercut to the chin of Miura and followed it up with a crushing right straight that sent Miura to the canvas. The brave Japanese stood up on shaky legs but referee Tony Weeks correctly stopped the fight moments later after Vargas kept on connecting unanswered punches to the gallant Japanese.
Time of stoppage is at 1:31 of the 9th.. Vargas was trailing on two scorecards and even on one before the stoppage.
