FINKEL CLAIMS MORE LIES By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Tue, 26 Jun 2007 The astute Shelly Finkel, the former manager of Manny Pacquiao has declined to comment on the lawsuit he filed in New York against Pacquiao, Top Rank Promotions and Bob Arum. Finkel told Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today "I can’t say anything during a lawsuit." However, he did say that the statements of an unnamed source who was quoted in a story filed by Joaquin Henson and carried by Philboxing.com were "mostly lies." It was not the first time that the Pacquiao camp has been accused of lying. Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer, after the two-day deposition given by Pacquiao in Los Angeles said it was "a web of lies." In a strange twist ace sports lawyer Judd Burstein who was Pacquiao’s attorney in the case he filed against former promoter Murad Muhammad is now on the other side. Not only is Burstein the lawyer of Finkel in the suit against Pacquiao, Top Rank and Arum he is also one of the lawyers in the powerhouse legal panel of Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions in their legal battle with Arum over the promotional rights to Pacquiao. Finkel has charged Pacquiao, Arum and Top Rank with breach of contract resulting from their concealing vital information. Boxing promoter and manager Rex "Wakee" Salud who is regarded as a close friend and confidant of Pacquiao but at times appears to be outside the inner circle of the boxing icon said the source who sought to dispute Finkel’s claims and to give the impression that he has no solid case was reportedly Michael Koncz, the Canadian adviser of Pacquiao. Several individuals including Salud said Pacquiao will be systematically drained of his resources by having to hire expensive American lawyers to defend him in the US and lamented the fact that he had ignored the sound advice of well-meaning friends and supporters. Pacquiao himself could not be contacted for comment. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Ronnie Nathanielsz. |
