NBA -- Clippers ground Pelicans; Lakers top Sixers By Mohan Labra Ramchandani PhilBoxing.com Tue, 24 Mar 2015 ![]() LOS ANGELES - The Los Angeles Clippers dealt a serious blow to the playoffs hopes of the New Orleans Pelicans on Sunday afternoon at Staples Center. Blake Griffin and Chris Paul tallied 23 points each and J.J. Redick added 20 as the Clippers clipped the Pelicans, 107-100. Los Angeles also won the rebounding battle, 42-41, had more assists, 25-21, and made only 10 turnovers against New Orleans' 18. New Orleans All-Star center Anthony Davis had 26 points and 12 rebounds in a losing effort. Eric Gordon pumped 23 points off the bench while Norris Cole and Quincy Pondexter had 12 apiece. The loss was especially stinging for the 37-33 Pelicans, who dropped to 10th place in the Western Conference and fell 3 1/2 games behind the 40-30 Oklahoma City Thunder for the 8th and last playoffs berth. "The loss hurts badly. I thought we had a chance for a while, but we couldn't take care of the ball the way we needed to. A lot of turnovers were just senseless," a disappointed Pelicans head coach Monty Williams said. With a dozen more games left in the schedule the Pelicans must leap frog past OKC and the 38-33 Phoenix Suns to earn a berth in the postseason. LAKERS 101, SIXERS 87 In the second game of a Staples Center double-header, the Los Angeles Lakers outplayed the Philadelphia 76ers, 101-87. Point guard Jeremy Lin starred for the Lakers finished with 29 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists. The former New York Knick who rose to fame as "Linsanity" made 10 of 16 field goals, 2-f-2 triples and 7-of-8 free throws in 29 minutes off the bench. "I thought he was great. He made great decisions. On the offensive end, he got guys involved. Defensively, he was where he was supposed to be," Lakers head coach Byron Scott said in praise of Lin. Jordan Hill tallied 12 points and 8 rebounds for the Lakers while Wesley Johnson, Wayne Ellington and Jabari Brown contributed 10 points each for Los Angeles, which bumped its modest record to 18-50. The Sixers, who fell to 17-53, got 14 points from Thomas Robinson. Philadelphia shot a miserable 32 of 89 percent from the field (36 percent), including just 9-of-27 from3-land. The Sixers also missed 7 of their 21 free throws. Photo: Blake Griffin soars past two Pelicans defenders on Sunday afternoon at the Staples Center. The Clips won, 107-100.
