Former Filipino world champion Malcolm "Eagle Eye" Tu?acao is being eyed to challenge WBO light flyweight king Hugo Cazares of Mexico as an undercard of the blockbuster Oscar de la Hoya vs Floyd Mayweather boxing event on May 5, 2007 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Eric Gomez, vice-president and matchmaker of Golden Boy Promotions, had informed the Mexican paper Esto about the plan.
Golden Boy Promotions had earlier scheduled Rey "Boom Boom" Bautista and Jimrex Jaca to appear in the blockbuster May 5 event provided Bautista and Jaca win their fights on Feb. 24 in Cebu.
Tu?acao (21-2-3 14 KOs), fighting on his 10th professional fight at that time, captured the WBC flyweight title in 2001 via a 7th round TKO victory over Medgoen Singsurat of Thailand. He lost the crown via a first round TKO to Pongsaklek Wonjongkam of Thailand on his second defense. Wonjongkam had never given up the title since then.
Cazares (24-3-1 18 KOs), of Los Mochis, Mexico, captured the WBO light flyweight title in 2005 from Nelson Dieppa of Puerto Rico and had successfully defended it 5 times since.
