CEBU CITY -- AJ 'Bazooka' Banal will take on Mexico City's Jose Angel Beranza in the undercard of the Brian Viloria-Jesus Iribe world title fight at the Blaisdell Center in Honolulu, Hawaii on August 29 after his original opponent, Victor Proa also of Mexico got injured, Dennis Canete, Vice-President of ALA Promotions has informed PhilBoxing.com.
Beranza (32-15-2, 25KO) looks to be an easier opponent for the Filipino prospect compared to Proa who had only a single loss in 29 outings. Beranza fought and lost to Diosdado Gabi during the August 2007 Philippines vs Mexico World Cup in Sacramento, CA. He fought 7 times after that amassing a dismal 2-win 5-loss record.
Banal is currently training at Freddie Roach's Wildcard Gym in Los Angeles together with stablemate WBO minimumweight champion Donnie Nietes who himself is preparing for the several-times postponed defense of his belt on Sep. 12 at Nueva Villarta in Nayarit, Mexico. Banal is expected to depart for Honolulu.
