Japanese rising-star Daiya Kira (5–0, 4 KOs) produced a stunning performance on Wednesday, September 2, overpowering and knocking out former champ Carlos Cañizales (28–4–1, 20 KOs) of Venezuela in 7 rounds to become "The New" WBA Light Flyweight (108 lbs) World Champion in Yokohama, Japan.
At just 23-years-old, and in only his 5th pro fight, the Osaka-native Kira displayed remarkable skills and power against the tough and experienced former champ.
Daiya Kira first had to handled an early storm before breaking down Cañizales, then stopping him in the 7th chapter, writing his name in boxing history as one of the fastest men to ever win a world title.
It was just his 5th pro bout. How about that! 👍
Cañizales, a former world champ, came-in to Japan ranked as the WBA #1 contender, and was favored by many analysts.
Despite that, Kira's promoter had faith in him. And the young boxer did not disappoint!
It was not essy. Cañizales came at him hard, but Kira refused to get intimidated, fighting effective with confidence, speed and precision to hand the Venezuelan slugger his 4th career defeat. Perhaps the toughest one.
SALINA SUFFERS SET BACK
Also on the Ohashi Promotions show, Davao veteran Jufel Salina (11–8–1, 8 KOs) was stopped in 5 rounds by unbeaten 18-year-old Japanese lightweight rookie Yuga Fujiki (2–0, 2 KOs).
