MANILA---A 10-year-old chess genius girl was proclaimed champion of the 6th Eastern Asia Youth Chess Championship held in Asia Hotel in Bangkok, Thailand from Nov. 4 to 12.
Jemaicah Yap Mendoza, a Grade 5 Special Science Class student of Concepcion Norte Elementary School in Sta. Maria, Romblon pocketed 3 Golds, 1, Silver and 2 Bronze medals in the Girl's 12 and under class.
Mendoza won Gold in the Individual Standard competition en route to a conditional Woman Fide Master title. The other 2 Golds came from Team Standard and Team Blitz.
She took the Team Silver Rapid and Individual Bronze in Rapid and Blitz event.
Her father is Benjamin P. Mendoza from Paranaque City and her mother is Darlene Yap Mendoza from Sta. Maria, Romblon.
"She was chosen and proclaimed ASEAN Champion G12 and received a medal and trophy," said proud father Benjamin P. Mendoza from Paranaque City.
Her sponsors for her trip to Thailand were Bishop Nehemias Martin, Bishop Rey, IRMEC council, Engr. Clarita M. Riano, Captain Pacquito Rodriguez Jhoanna, Rowena Mendoza Julie Riano, BCF Family, Concepcion Norte Elementary School headed by Felyn Catajay Mallorca - School head and faculty teachers, LGU Paranaque headed Mayor Eric Olivares, Vice Mayor Joan Villafuerte and the City Council.
