LOS ANGELES -- Mauricio Herrera of Riverside, CA won by majority technical decision after five rounds over Hunk Lundy of Philadelphia, PA to capture the vacant NABF super lightweight title Saturday night at the Sports Arena here.
A violent clash of heads toward the end of the very first round cut Herrera on the hairline. Another accidental clash of heads in the second produced a cut above Herrera's right eye. Although Herrera struggled with a bloodied face, he seemed to get the upperhand with right straight and well-timed counters against Lundy before Referee Jack Reiss halted the bout at 2:04 in the 5th round.
Because the fight lasted more than four rounds, the result went to the scorecards where Herrera got the better of Lundy with scores of 48-47, 48-47 and 48-48.
Herrera now improved his record to 22-5-0 with 7 stoppages while Lundy dropped to 25-5-1, 12KO.
