10 LIVE BOUTS THIS SATURDAY AT THE GLENDALE CIVIC AUDITORIUM

Following up a successful show last year that featured world class talent from the Top Rank stable as well as local prospects from the Los Angeles area, Glendale Fight Night has outdone itself with a fully stacked card of compelling bouts at the Glendale Civic Auditorium this Saturday, August 9th.

Glendale Fight News offers up a preview of some of Saturday's most interesting bouts. In these matchups, fight fans are guaranteed some nonstop action, knockouts, tough bouts to score, and possibly an upset.

Jose Felix Jr. (26-1-1) vs. Alejandro Rodriguez (21-14-1)

Don't let the record fool you folks. Jose Felix, Jr., coming off the first loss of his career when he challenged Bryan Vasquez (32-1) for the interim WBA Super Featherweight, is potentially in for a very long night with Alejandro Rodriguez. In his last bout, Rodriquez took undefeated prospect Haskell Rhodes (19-0) to the brink of an upset in a split decision that barely went in the favor of highly regarded Rhodes. In his previous fight before the Rhodes bout, Rodriuez earned a Draw with local Texas favorite Robert Marroquin (23-3) and we know how Texas judges love their own fighters. Alejandro Rodriguez is a battle-tested, upset-minded veteran who is going to do everything in his power to upset the apple cart.

On the flip side, Jose Felix Jr. is not one to be messed with. Possessing power in both hands and great speed, he brings into the ring the history and toughness of his native Los Mochis, Sinaloa (hometown of three-division world champion Fernando Montiel, former four-division world champion Jorge Arce, former two-division world champion Humberto Soto, world title challenger Raymundo Beltran, and a host of others). Felix Jr. has his eyes set on the lightweight world title and knows that he must go through the very tough and rugged Alejandro Rodriguez first.

This bout is the main event on the Solo Boxeo Tecate on Unimas show and for good reason. Expect fireworks. Expect them early. Expect them often.

Ivan Najera (13-0) vs. Stan Martyniouk (13-1)

Currently scheduled as the co-main event of the live "Solo Boxeo Tecate" broadcast on Unimas, this lightweight attraction is a typical contrast in both boxing styles and the roads boxers travel to realize their dreams in the sport. And this often leads to difficulty in predicting a result.

Najera, sporting the same "Bam Bam" nickname of Top Rank stablemate Brandon Rios, will play the role of "Bull" in this bout. While Martyniouk, a former #1 ranked National amateur with 32 championships in less than 7 years, will be the "Matador" in this affair. Najera is the young 21 year-old prospect who did not take well to the amateur style but has excelled since turning pro at the tender age of 18 and is considered by many boxing pundits as San Antonio's next World Title contender. While Martyniouk is the former amateur standout who saw his ascension derailed when he was upset by journeyman Khadaphi Proctor (6-5-1) four years ago. Martyniouk lost his promotional contract with Goosen-Tutor as a result but has been slowly been working his way back under the tutelage of Virgil Hunter. Sparring with the likes of Amir Khan, Andre Berto, and Alfredo Angulo, to name a few, Stan "The Man" is out to show that at 29 years-old, he has matured into a better and stronger fighter that still deserves worldwide recognition.

Najera's last bout was the biggest of his career when he overcame a 2nd round knockout to beat another one-loss boxer, Angel Hernandez (8-1). Martyniouk last fought one year ago when he outpointed regular Manny Pacquiao sparring partner, David Rodela (16-8-3). Najera will look to work inside and land his power shots. Martyniouk, at 5'10", will have a distinct height and reach advantage over the 5'5" Najera and may work from the outside.

Both fighters are eager and hungry for different reasons. One wants to keep rising to the top while the other wants to return to the top. Both fighters have been knocked down multiple times in their careers. All of this makes this bout a potential "Fight of the Night" candidate.

Egis Kavaliaskus (6-0) vs. Benjamin Whitaker (7-0)

Any time you get two hungry welterweight prospects with undefeated records into the center of the ring, you are pretty much guaranteed a barnburner. Neither fighter is going to want to see their "0" go and both fighters will give it their all to make sure their respective professional record remains unblemished.

Kavaliaskus is the more pedigreed and decorated of the two combatants, representing his native Lithuania in the 2008 and 2012 Olympic games and capturing a Bronze medal in the 2011 World Championships. He is trained by Trainer of the Year Robert Garcia and brings that Oxnard power with 5 of his 6 victories coming by knockout.

San Antonio's Whitaker got a late start in the pro ranks and at 30 years-old, realizes that this bout may be his biggest chance to make some noise in the boxing business. Whitaker will be unfazed about facing an undefeated or experienced boxer as he already beat Felipe Reyes (5-0) last November and then captured the Texas State Welterweight title against a more experienced Milton Ramos (10-4-2). When asked whether he was worried about facing the Robert Garcia trained Kavaliaskus, Whitaker responded: "I'm not worried about the fact that he's training with Robert Garcia, because I'm not fighting Robert...I'm fighting Egidijus. That's who I'll be facing on August 9th, so I'm completely focused on him."

Kavaliaskus will look to get off to a fast start as he has done in all of his professional bouts and will try to have Whitaker taste the canvas early. But Whitaker will seek to prove that he can adapt well and outbox the head hunting former Olympian. This is a great stylistic matchup of unbeatens and will be a 6 rounder to remember.

Esquiva Falcao (3-0) vs. Malcolm Terry (6-3)

If there is a bout that one had to predict will end in knockout, this will be the one. There are much more proficient knockout artists on this show such as Jose Zepeda (16 knockouts in 19 fights) and Jose Felix Jr (21 knockouts in 28 fights). And the 2012 London Olympics Silver Medalist from Brazil, Esquiva Falcao, only has one knockout in his first 3 bouts. But Malcolm Terry is the X-Factor here. He is your prototypical all-or-nothing Midwestern brawler. In all six of his victories, Terry has ended them within 3 rounds by knockout. But in his previous bout, Terry was knocked out in the 2nd round by prospect Simeon Hardy (12-0, 10KOs).

This fight will come down to who can connect with the power blow first. Terry will no doubt come out swinging for the fences. But Falcao will look to show Terry that his Olympic Silver Medal puts him miles above the knockout victims that Terry has grown used to in Tennessee. The countdown is on to see who hits the canvas first!!

Zachary Wohlman (8-1-1) vs. Paul Velarde (3-4-3)

This is GLENDALE FIGHT NIGHT's own version of the Freeway Series that is currently being played out by the Dodgers and Angels and may just be a World Series preview. L.A. vs. O.C....Hollywood vs. Tustin....Glam vs. Grit....Wohlman vs. Velarde fits the bill.

Wohlman, the part-time fashion model, L.A. Weekly cover boy, Freddie Roach prot?g?, and occasional groupie magnet, has made his name known with the young and boisterous Hollywood crowd supporting his every bout in bunches. Velarde, the blue collar boxing trainer at the UFC gym in Lake Forest and married family man and father to Paul Jr., made his name known in the Orange County boxing circuit.

Whenever you see a guy with multiple draws on his record like Velarde, you know that he is "in it to win it" for every single round of every fight and will bring it no matter what. Velarde has been in with a high level of competition as his losses include decision battles against Top Rank blue chip prospect and former National Golden Gloves Champion, Erick De Leon (currently 8-0), and Golden Boy prospect Jamie Kavanaugh (currently 17-1-1). Wohlman in the meantime, who previously campaigned at welterweight while Velarde campaigned at lightweight, will look to take advantage of his size and possible ring rust on the part of Velarde who has not fought in over a year. If Wohlman can apply a heavy dose of his patented jab and follow up with combinations, he will make his legions of fans at the Civic very happy.
