Arizona Boxing News & Notes with Don Smith: Beltran Fight Plans Delayed, Ramos out 4-6 Months

PhilBoxing.com

Beltran.

Boxing Fans,

WBO # 1 ranked lightweight contender Ray Beltran nixed the Juan Diaz June 28 proposed bout due to a need for more preparation time. He was hoping to fight in July, but now the affable boxing veteran believes his return to action might be as late as September. He was unaware that Top Rank is mulling over the idea of putting on a show in Arizona. Top Rank has literally stayed away promotionally from Arizona since promoting Julio Cesar Chavez?s farewell fight at US Airways in Phoenix, Arizona on September 17, 2005. A little info for boxing trivia buffs, he lost to used car salesman/boxer Grover Wiley. Asked if he would like to would like to fight on the rumored card, he replied yes.

Beltran recently moved back to Phoenix from his Los Angeles digs and the process of relocating and settling his children in a new school prompted him to take a timeout from boxing; family considerations is very important. Before he returned to Los Angeles, the thoughtful son took his mother, wife and daughter on a Mother?s Day shopping spree.

The contender would like to continue his career as a lightweight. There was speculation that he would jump to 140, but for now, he feels comfortable as a lightweight. Ray watched the Mayweather/ Maidana fight at Twin Peaks Restaurant, in Phoenix, where the current WBO NABF lightweight champion signed autographs and posed for pictures. Ray is very loyal to boxing fans. Saturday he was at the Marquez vs. Alvarado fight and he agreed with the raising of Marquez?s hand in victory. Heck of a fight!

Ramos Update: Prized welterweight prospect Abel Ramos, Casa Grande Arizona, is recovering from a broken left hand suffered in his Majority Draw scrape with tough Levan Ghvamichava on 5/10 at the USC Garden Center in Los Angeles. Trainer/brother Jesus Ramos Sr. reports that Abel was operated on Wednesday 5/14 in Los Angeles and the 22 year old undefeated pugilist (9-0-2) is expected to return to sparring in 3 months with the doctor?s permission. Abel?s 13 year old 90 lb. nephew (Jesus Ramos Jr.) will box at a smoker tournament scheduled for 5/24 at Central Gym in Phoenix off Van Buren. First bout starts at 1 p.m.?with 15- 20 bouts on tap. Adult admission is $10.00 and kids under 12 can watch for free. Speedy recovery, Abel!

Fan Base Update: According to spokesman Henri Westcott, junior middleweight Janks Trotter, 7-1-1w/7 knockouts (seasonal resident of Buckeye, Arizona) has signed a contract to fight fellow Canadian Phil Rose at 158 lbs. on Sunday, July 6 at the Roadhouse Night Club under a huge tent. Rose is best known for knocking out two time Canadian Olympian Adam Trupish and almost upsetting undefeated Brandon (Bad Boy) Cook in March of this year. It should be a Main Event to behold.

Trotter, once the poster boy for Canadian boxing, last fought (2012) in Calgary, Alberta where he got thumped by Adam Trupish at the 72 second mark in the first round. A distraught Trotter gave up the sport for almost 2 years until he found a new management team that helped re-energize him and motivate the 30 year old to return to boxing. Trotter is no longer affiliated with Fan Base Promotions, but FBP will promote this show in concert with a trio of presenting sponsors: Rocky Mountain Cutting, Coring RMCC and Trinity Boxing.

The Co-Main Event features four time Canadian National Champion Alex Rynn who compiled a remarkable 90-3 record as an amateur. His ring foe will be former MMA tough guy, Kyle Oliveria; a vicious puncher with an iron jaw. At least 4 more bouts will be added to the card.

Reversal of Decision: Last week it was reported, in this column that Amateur boxing coach Damien Stone (Stonehard Boxing in Chandler, Arizona) passed a background check after he was found guilty on one count of prostitution and would be allowed to continue as a member of the USA Boxing Arizona chapter of the National organization. After an outcry from the Arizona boxing community and a complaint lodged with USA Boxing, the 40 year old married with children boxing coach is now banned from participating in USA Boxing sanctioned events. Lynette Smith, USA Boxing, sent an email addressing the issue and said Mr. Stone would be notified immediately of the punitive action. The length of his ban is unknown. It is rather ironic that he is still on the USA Boxing mailing list; probably an oversight.

Arizona Boxer Loses in Semifinals: 108 lb. Adrian Servin, Knockout Gym in Phoenix, Arizona, won his Quarterfinal match in the recently concluded National Golden Gloves Tournament, but fell prey to Christian Carto 5-0 in the Semifinals. The talented Phoenix boxer came home with a Bronze medal. Arizona teammate Alfolnso Olveras (Neutral Corner Gym in Tucson) lost in the quarterfinals. Carto, fighting out of New Jersey, went on to win the Gold Medal. It was an off year for the Arizona Golden Gloves team. Good luck in 2015. Servin is trained by Andrew Soto.

Iron Boy 13: Super middleweight Siju Shabazz is tentatively scheduled to fight on the June 6 Iron Boy 13 card in El Paso, Texas, but count him out if Iron Boy can?t find him an opponent by the end of this week. Young prospect David Benavidez also needs an opponent to stay on the card. Here is the confirmed matchup. The venue is the Buchanan Event Center in El Paso. For tickets call 915-633-1117. All bouts are subject to change.

Under Card:

(1) Emmanuel Nieves, Phoenix, Arizona (debut) vs. Juan Carlos Guillen, El Paso TX. 1-0, 128 lbs. (2) Adam Vasquez 1-0 Las Cruces NM vs. Anthony Rocha (debut) Lubbock TX. 147 lbs.(3)David Espino (debut) vs. El Paso TX. vs. Ricardo Urquizo 1-0-1 Clovis NM. 165 lbs. (4) Josue 1-1 El Paso TX. Vs. Larazdo Dominguez 1-0 Roswell NM. 147 lbs. (5) Ayanna Vasquez (debut) Las Cruces NM. vs. Jazmin Quezada (debut) 125 lbs.

Co-Main Event: Carlos Villa Texas. 5-1-1 vs. Matthew Baca New Mexico 4-1-1 140lbs. + 2 Main Event: Oscar Valenzuela Texas 6-0-1 vs. Alexis Delbosque 3-0 Mexico 135 lbs.

Olympic Boxing Package: USA Boxing is offering fans a chance to catch the 2014 Junior Olympic tournament on live stream from Charleston West Virginia, June 10-14 for 24.95. For more details, go to the USA Boxing website. It is an excellent way to follow the boxing stars of tomorrow.

Another Win: Phoenix Welterweight Jose Benavidez scored a unanimous six round decision over Angel Hernandez in Fresno California on May 17. All three judges awarded the bout to the 22 year old Benavidez with identical scores of 60-51. The win boosts the Top Rank Prot?g??s record to 20-0 with 14 knockouts. Also victorious in Fresno, 24 year old Mexican heavyweight Andy ?The Destroyer? Ruiz Jr. Continues his dream of becoming the first heavyweight to win a world title with a second round win over Manuel Quezada of Fresno California. Cris Arreola?s recent knockout loss has the Mexican faithful looking for another Heavy to champion. At 6? 2? ?Ruiz is one of the shorter heavyweight contenders on the current list of contending heavies, but Mike Tyson stood on his toes to reach 5?10? and if my memory serves me well, he did okay.

As for Benavidez, I would be surprised to see him fight another six rounder and I hope he gets a shot at a minor title before March of 2015. Jose, in my opinion, is definitely ready to take on the top echelon of the second tier of welterweight contenders.. It would be nice to watch him fight in his home state of Arizona before the end of 2014.

Short Jabs: After two years of chomping at the bit, Arizona heavyweight Eddie Martinez Jr. makes his professional debut vs. Edgar Jaquez at the Phoenician Resort in Phoenix, Arizona. Steve Ayala is the promoter and the event is a private show. 5 other fights are slated..... Glendale, Arizona light welterweight Luis Oliveras still nursing a sore left hand. The 21 year old refuses to take Cortisone shots which mask MRI results, according to most medical experts. Luis will visit a top notch bone specialist in the next few days?.Nonito Donaire hasn?t returned answers to questions I emailed him. He did tell a reporter in Manila PI.that after his May 31 fight, he would enroll in school and begin the process of becoming a programmer??Some fight fans are calling the Alvarado vs. Marquez battle: the fight of the year; much too early for such a declaration! After his victory, Marquez played coy when talking about another go with Manny. Until Next Time!
