PE?ALOSA CONFIDENT NOBODY CAN BEAT NIETES

PhilBoxing.com

Former two division world champion Gerry Pe?alosa is confident that there is no fighter at present who could beat WBO light flyweight champion Donnie ?Ahas? Nietes who scored a spectacular 9th round KO over Interim champion and mandatory challenger Moises Fuentes of Mexico at the Mall of Asia Arena last Saturday.

A good crowd was treated to a classic display by Nietes whose combinations, footwork and devastating overhand right took the sting out of the challenger who had confidently predicted he would win by a knockout after Nietes retained his title by a majority draw at the Waterfront Hotel and Casino in Cebu on March 3 last year.

Pe?alosa told the Manila Standard that Nietes would beat unbeaten Roman Gonzalez of Nicaragua, the WBA light flyweight champion and if he decides to move up to flyweight he could also defeat Juan Francisco Estrada, the reigning WBO/WBA champion who won the title from Brian Viloria in Macau and retained it against Milan Melindo also at the Cotai Arena in Macau and more recently scored a 10th round TKO over Richie Mepranum in Sonora, Mexico.

The former two division world champion told us that Nietes ?looked terrific and in that kind of fight if he shows that skill, he would be hard to beat.?

Nietes himself told the Standard before leaving for Cebu that he looked at his rematch with Fuentes as ?a challenge to prove myself? even as he said ?I was determined show my skill and power and my favorite overhand right? which is the punch that demolished Fuentes.

Nietes said he and the training staff headed by Edmund Villamor had studied the tape of his first fight with Fuentes and worked out a perfect gameplan that would watch out for the right straight of Fuentes while strength and conditioning coach Nick Curson?s regimen helped him in terms of ?speed, power and explosiveness.?

The decision as to whether to remain at 108 or move up to 112 is a decision that would be made by his manager, respected boxing patron Tony Aldeguer and his son and ALA Promotions president Michael Aldeguer.

No matter what the decision is or the plans are for his next fight, Nietes said ?I give it all for the honor, pride and glory of our country? and revealed that ?in every fight I ask God to protect us from harm, win or lose.?
