TALL AND YOUNG ROSKIE CRISTOBAL SCORES 7TH STRAIGHT KO VICTORY By Manny Piñol PhilBoxing.com Sat, 18 Jan 2014 Tall and young Roskie Cristobal, the 19-year-old farmer's son from Pres. Roxas, North Cotabato, scored his 7th straight knockout victory in Gen. Santos City Tuesday night with a 3rd round stoppage of his opponent. While his performance was not as impressive as his previous wins, the 5' 10" tall left-handed fighter showed his natural power as he floored his opponent with just one swing of his left early in the 3rd. "I think I hit him not with my knuckles but still he went down," Cristobal told me after the fight promoted by the Mananquil brothers of Gen. Santos city along with their partner businessman Wangyu Tan. Cristobal, a farmer's son from Pres. Roxas town in North Cotabato and a product of the grassroots boxing program I started as Governor, has power and this is a factor which could spell the difference between victory and defeat especially in the big weight categories like the lightweight division. His development as a fighter, however, is hampered by the fact that in the Philippines there is very little competition in the lightweight to welterweight categories, the latter being the weight level where Filipino boxing icon Manny Pacquiao and American fighter Floyd Mayweather belong to. And not very many local boxing managers would like to pit their young fighters against a known power-puncher like Cristobal which is why his opponent last night, Michael Manambay, was a repeat customer for the North Cotabato fighter. There are plans to bring Cristobal to the US where he could train and have the chance of sparring and fighting quality opponents to really test his mettle. It is not clear yet how far the young Roskie Cristobal will go as a fighter. But having seen him fight as an 11-year-old amateur boxer, I believe that Cristobal possesses two very important attributes which could make champions - heart and power. All that he needs now is the support for him to fine tune and polish his fighting style. When that happens, another poor farmer's son will be lifted out of poverty.
