NBA --Nets survive late Heat rally to win in 2OT, 104-95

PhilBoxing.com

NEW YORK -- A night after losing to the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden, the Miami Heat completed their New York City road trip by coming up short again, this time to the Brooklyn Nets Friday night at the sold out Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

In contrast, the Nets remained unbeaten in 2014 with tonight's victory over the two-time defending NBA champions in addition to recent wins over the Oklahoma City Thunder and the Golden State Warriors.

The Nets were lead by the sharp-shooting of All-Star guard Joe Johnson, who scored 22 points in the first quarter, shooting 9-10 from the floor in that period. Johnson ended the game with 32 points. Point Guard Shaun Livingston filled in admirably for the injured Deron Williams with 19 points and a game high 11 rebounds. Paul Pierce scored 23 points, but missed ill-advised off balance jumpshots at the end of regulation and the end of the first overtime that would have won the game for the Nets.

The Miami Heat were lead by the 2013 MVP Lebron James who lead all scorers with 36 points. Even while missing three starters (Dwyane Wade, Mario Chalmers, Shane Battier did not dress due to injuries) the Heat took the lead late in the fourth quarter thanks to James' relentless drives to the basket to score or draw fouls. One such drive resulted in a flagrant foul on Nets forward Mirza Teletovic who appeared to pull James down by his neck.

Regarding the flagrant foul, James told reporters after the game "It was not a basketball play, he went around my neck." Heat guard Norris Cole chipped in with 18 points.

The NBA debuted their "Nickname Jerseys" tonight in Brooklyn as players wore jerseys such as "King James" (Lebron James), "Birdman" (Chris Andersen), "Shuttlesworth" (Ray Allen's character Jesus Shuttlesworth in Spike Lee's "He Got Game"), "Big Ticket" (Kevin Garnett), "Truth" (Paul Pierce). The two teams will be wearing their nickname jerseys again on March 12th and April 8th in Miami.
