RAPID CHESS: PINOY GM JOHN PAUL GOMEZ BAGS BRONZE AT MYANMAR SEA GAMES By Marlon Bernardino PhilBoxing.com Wed, 18 Dec 2013 Manila---GRANDMASTER (GM) John Paul Gomez has won a bronze medal for Philippines in the 27th Southeast Asian Games-Myanmar 2013 International Chess Individual Rapid-Men. The Binan, Laguna native Gomez, one of the top players of National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) Chairman/President Prospero "Butch" Pichay Jr., settled for a truce with Singaporean International Master (IM) Go Weiming in the final round to score 5.0 points in seven outings and captured the bronze medal. Vietnamese GM Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son halved the point with Indon GM Susanto Megaranto to claim the gold medal with 6.0 points. Vietnamese IM Nguyen Duc Hoa, on the other hand, edged Filipino GM Oliver Barbosa to capture the silver medal with 5.5 points. Gomez, earlier won silver medal in the individual Chess 960 Rapid event or much known Fischer Random Chess topped by GM Megaranto. On Wednesday, the pair of Gomez and Barbosa were leading the way in the "Transfer chess men pair" according to NCFP Chairman/President Prospero "Butch" Pichay Jr. Gomez and Barbosa, the Filipino dynamic duo edged countrymen GMs Darwin Laylo and Mark Paragua in the first round then crushed the tandem of IMs Myo Naing and Zaw Oo of Myanmar in the second round then defeated GM Cao Sang and IM Nguyen Duc Hoa of Vietnam in the third round. 12-time national open champion GM Rogelio "Joey" Antonio Jr, meantime won a bronze medal in the men's individual blitz chess competition.
