NEW ZEALAND BOXER IN SERIOUS CONDITION AFTER 10TH ROUND TKO By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Mon, 18 Nov 2013 New Zealand light heavyweight Daniel ?The King? Mackinnon is in serious condition in Waikato Hospital after he lost by a 10th round TKO to Robert ?The Butcher? Berridge in a WBO Oriental light heavyweight title fight in Hamilton, New Zealand. The Dominion Post reported that MacKinnon was taken to the hospital in critical condition shortly after the fight. MacKinnon?s manager Ken Reinsfield said ?He had an emergency procedure on arrival and is now in a serious condition in the intensive care unit.? It was reportedly a brutal fight with the 30 year old MacKinnon getting dropped in round eight, again in round nine along with Berridge who was also sent to the canvas and one more time in round ten when the fight was stopped. MacKinnon also suffered a swollen right eye. Reinsfield told the Dominion Post that MacKinnon was rushed to hospital after he collapsed in his dressing room after his title fight and after CT scans he was rushed into surgery and Reinsfield feared the worst. He said "Brain surgery is brain surgery, you know? He may not have come out of that alive." But less than 24 hours later, MacKinnon was awake and talking. "He's unbelievable, he's a real fighter. He's so tough, he's got the heart of a lion," Reinsfield said. Reinsfield said he'd received a message from MacKinnon on his phone earlier today, telling him he was okay. It was the best news he'd heard "all year". MacKinnon sustained the injury in what Reinsfield is calling the "most brutal" fight in New Zealand that he can recall. The towel was resting in Reinsfield's hands when the call was made. He was about to throw it in. "It was a good stoppage. I think the ref did a good job, he was protecting the fighter. These are two guys that are warriors and no one would take a step back." MacKinnon?s record dropped to 21-8-1 with 9 knockouts while the 28 year old Berridge improved to 22-1-1 with 18 knockouts.
