"King" Arthur Villanueva: Chess Pro to Ring Warrior PhilBoxing.com Fri, 25 Oct 2013 ![]() Arthur Villanueva is one of the brightest rising stars in filipino boxing. Known in the ring as "King" Arthur, his reign in boxing has just begun. Remaining undefeated with 23 wins and 13 KO's, the OPBF Super Bantamweight champion shows exceeding promise. Although hailing from Bago city outside the boxing hub of Bacolod, Negros Occidental Island, Villanueva never imagined he would be a ring warrior himself. The son of a sugar mill worker, Villanueva is the 11th of 12 children, having only one older brother that participated in amateur boxing. As a young man, he was already the "King" of a completely different arena-- the realm of chess. Villanueva was an adept chess player, being the best in his school and an inter-city tournament champion. He relates his strategy on the board to his approach in the ring: "Boxing is just like chess-- you need to know when to defend, attack, and sacrifice," he says. It wasn't until the late age of 16 that his friend introduced him to boxing; However, the versatile tactician swiftly ascended in rank and earned his name as a Philippines' Region 6 champion. Unfortunately, Villanueva's father will never know the accomplishments of his son. He died of complications from diabetes, just one year before Villanueva began his boxing career. In his father's stead, he supports his family and intends to use his future fight purse to supplement the loan he will take out to purchase a new family home. Having been training with ALA Gym only for the past two years, he has high hopes for becoming a world champion. When asked about how he feels about his upcoming match with knockout artist Edgar "Chololo" Martinez of Mexico (20-4-1), he says: "Mexican boxers are always tough so I shouldn't be too confident, but I'll be cautious and ready to adjust in the ring." Villanueva will be defending home turf alongside fellow undefeated stablemate Genesis "Azukal" Servania (22-0). Servania will be fighting for the WBO Inter-Continental Super Bantamweight Champion from Panamanian Rafael "El Torito" Concepcion. The Filipino boxers will defend their belts at Waterfront Hotel and Casino this October 26th in an ALA Promotions and ABS-CBN Sports presentation: Pinoy Pride XXII: "The Revenge." Pinoy Pride XXII tickets are available at SM cinema, Robinsons Department Store Costumer Service, ALA Gym BTC, ALA Gym Mandaue, ALA Gym Minglanilla, ALA Gym Banawa and Bisaya Ispisyal Ayala, Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino Lobby, FORMO Restaurant and Lounge, ALA Promotions Office.
