MATTHEW HATTON JOINS BROTHER RICKY IN RETIREMENT
By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Wed, 04 Sep 2013

Former world title challenger and European champion Matthew Hatton who dropped a unanimous twelve round decision to undefeated Mexican Saul ?Canelo? Alvarez in a battle for the vacant WBC light middleweight title in March 2011 has retired after 13 years in the ring.
Britain?s Daily Mirror newspaper said that while Matthew Hatton ?was never able to match the achievements of big brother Ricky, he still had a successful career and his best moment was winning the European welterweight title in 2010.?
The 32 year old Hatton retired following his March loss to Chris van Heerden and his mind was made up when surgeons told him he could not fight again this year because of nerve damage he suffered around his eye.
The Mirror quoted Matthew Hatton who won 43 of his 52 fights as saying ?The one thing that I always wanted out of my career was the chance to say that I was a world champion.?
After the loss to Van Heerden, Matthew Hatton said ?I thought about retiring straightaway because I genuinely believe that I should have been able to beat a fighter of that standard. That's not me being disrespectful to Chris because he is a good fighter, but I just think to be at the level I believed I could be at, I had to be beating fighters of Chris' caliber."
"Ricky" Hatton was stopped in ten rounds by Floyd Maywearther Jr but suffered a crushing second round annihilation at the hands of "Fighter of the Decade" Manny Pacquiao.
