THE STEVE NASH FOUNDATION SHOWDOWN LA CELEBRATES SUCCESSFUL INAUGURAL EVENT

PhilBoxing.com

Los Angeles, CA (July 16, 2013) ? On Sunday, July 14th, the inaugural Los Angeles edition Steve Nash?s popular charity soccer event, the Steve Nash Foundation Showdown, took place at the Salvation Army Red Shield Community Center near Downtown Los Angeles.

In front of 4,000 fans, Showdown LA featured professional soccer and NBA stars in a pick-up-style soccer game to benefit the Steve Nash Foundation?s programs for underserved children. The game was a friendly yet competitive match, complete with epic celebrations, courageous headers, and unheard of step-overs; top class talent was definitely on display the neighborhood park setting. The action on the field was intense, and had fans cheering from their on-field positions, bleacher seating, and from standing-room only locations on the pitch, along the adjacent sidewalks and up against the surrounding fence. On-field host LZ Granderson (of ESPN and CNN) did a perfect job engaging Showdown?s fans in comedic banter and admiration of the athletes and their dedication to community service.

Showdown LA?s athletes included:

Team Light Blue: Robbie Rogers (LA Galaxy), Robbie Keane (LA Galaxy), Klay Thompson (Golden State Warriors), Carlos Bocanegra (Chivas USA), Martin Zuniga (former Chivas USA & Mexican National Team member), Brian McBride (former MLS and U.S. National team member), Jovan Kirovski (former LA Galaxy player), Brian Dunseth (former LA Galaxy player), and Marc Stein (ESPN).

Team Navy Blue: Steve Nash (Steve Nash Foundation President & LA Lakers), Simone Sandri (Showdown Co-Founder), Jared Dudley (LA Clippers), Carlo Cudicini (LA Galaxy), Jeremy Lin (Houston Rockets), Kyle Martino (former LA Galaxy player), John O?Brien (former Chivas USA & U.S. National Team member), and Claudio Suarez (former Chivas USA & Mexico National Team member).

Team Nash won Showdown LA with a score of 5-4, with Nash scoring the game-winning goal with under a minute to play. Other goals came from Klay Thompson (2), Kyle Martino (2), Jared Dudley, Carlos Bocanegra, Marc Stein, and Jeremy Lin.

Prior to the match, Robbie Rogers was congratulated by Nash and presented with the ?Spirit of Showdown? award, a Girard-Perregaux Chrono Hawk watch, in honor of his inspirational commitment to youth and acceptance, on and off the field. While each of the players? performances contributed to the best Showdown yet, the goaltending excellence of Carlo Cudicini - which helped lead his team to victory - earned him the Girard-Perregaux Most Valuable Player Award. Nash assisted Girard-Perregaux representatives in awarding one of the brand?s signature Chrono Hawk timepieces in an on-field ceremony following the match.

After signing hundreds of autographs and taking pictures with grateful fans, the action kept going at Showdown After Hours at L.A. LIVE?s Target Terrace. The competitive nature of the evening led to a heated auction for Showdown souvenirs and autographed jerseys from the game?s superstars. 100% of proceeds from the auction and ticket sales to Showdown and Showdown After Hours benefitted the Steve Nash Foundation?s initiatives.

Showdown LA was sponsored by AEG, AXS.TV, Major League Soccer, JetBlue, BlackBerry, Kappa USA, Vita Coco, WAT-AAH!, Jawbone ?, Under Armour, popchips, and Girard-Perregaux, with support from Beck & Score, El Cholo, ESPNLA 710, and Rock?n Fish at L.A. LIVE, as well as Time Warner Cable SportsNet, Time Warner Cable Deportes and Time Warner Cable Sports, whose affiliates across the country will televise the event in English and Spanish this summer.
