NBA --Warriors win Game 4 thriller, tie series at 2-2 By Shelley Dano PhilBoxing.com Tue, 14 May 2013 OAKLAND -- The Golden State Warriors showed grace under pressure and pulled a 97-97 overtime victory in Game 4 over the San Antonio Spurs Sunday afternoon at the Oracle Arena in Oakland. Down by eight with five minutes left in regulation, the Warriors clawed back gallantly and matched the seasoned Spurs lineup with a firepower featuring Stephen Curry and rookie Harrison Barnes. Playing in pain with a sprained ankle, Curry scored 22 points including a three-point play off Tim Duncan in a gutsy drive that put Golden State safely ahead, 93-84, with 1:45 left in overtime. But it was the 23-year-old Barnes who gave the Warriors a new offensive option as he created match-up problems in a career-high 24-point output including 10 rebounds. On a night when starter Klay Thompson went cold, Barnes took over scoring chores as Spurs coach Greg Popovich was forced to take out prized point guard Tony Parker, who could not solve Barnes' advantage inside. Parker, the hero of Game 3, was also playing with a bruised left calf. After a tied 84-84 score in regulation, the Warriors went on a 9-0 run capped by Curry's heroics in overtime and showed good defense with Andrew Bogut controlling the boards. Bogut hauled down 18 rebounds and defended the paint well even as the Spurs tried to mount a rally. Danny Green scored the only basket for the Spurs in overtime, a trey from right court, to put the Spurs closer, 87-93, with 1:29 left. But that proved to be their last offensive thrust as the Warriors played with spirit and determination to the delight of a sellout crowd of 19,596 at Oracle Arena. Crucial Game 5 is slated on Tuesday at the AT&T Center in San Antonio This best-of-seven series is now tied at 2-2. The new Warriors, who outrebounded the Spurs, 65-51, will try to make a name for themselves after sorry misses in the past. They are now in the same situation when they bowed to the Los Angeles Lakers in 1977, after tying the series at 2-apiece. (SD) Click here to view a list of other articles written by Shelley Dano. |
